Tigers aim for school's first national title

March 15, 2007, Springfield, Mass. - Just four teams remain in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship and, for the second time in six years, Kris Huffman's DePauw Tigers are one of them.
DePauw, 29-3 and winners of nine straight, takes on the 10th-ranked University of Mary Washington (30-2) in the first Division III national semifinal game on Friday, March 16. Tipoff from the Blake Arena on the Springfield (Mass.) College campus is set for 4 p.m.
The second semifinal game at 6 p.m. pits 11th-ranked Washington (Mo.) University (24-5) against conference rival and sixth-ranked New York University (27-2).
DePauw earned a spot in the semifinals following a 74-61 win over seventh-ranked Calvin in the sectional championship game at Emmanuel College in Boston. The Tigers knocked off the 13th-ranked hosts in the sectional semifinal by a 74-50 score.
DePauw defeated Transylvania in the first round by a 74-54 count and Denison, 74-66, in the second.
The Eagles earned their first final four trip by beating top-ranked Bowdoin in the sectional final, 64-59. They defeated host and third-ranked Scranton in the sectional semifinals, 48-45.
In the first round, Mary Washington defeated Notre Dame (Md.) by a 66-30 score and Christopher Newport, 77-61. Mary Washington enters the semifinals on a 26-game win streak after opening the season at 4-2.
The winner of Friday’s semifinal game advances to Saturday’s 3 p.m. national championship game, while the loser plays in the 12:30 p.m. third-place contest. Saturday's national title game will be carried live on CSTV.
