Tigers finish third at NCAA Championships, while Gates places fourth

DePauw accepts its third-place trophy for the second straight year. The Tigers have been a top-four finisher each of the last three seasons.

Green Lake, Wis. - For the second consecutive year, the DePauw women's golf team finished third at the NCAA Division III Championships at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia.
On a day in which the temperature barely topped 50 degrees and a steady rain was present for the first nine holes, the Tigers shot the days' second best team score at 338 to finish with a four-round total of 1,315. Methodist College won its seventh conseuctive title with a 1,303 to edge out the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor by two strokes at 1,305. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was just six strokes behind DePauw with a 1,321.
DePauw freshman Sarah Gates finished fourth in her first national tournament with a 319 including rounds of 76, 78, 80 and 85. Senior Deb Garriott finished in a tie for 14th with a 330. Junior Lindsay Amore put together the Tigers' best round on Friday with an 80 to finish the tournament with a 332 and tied for 19th. Senior Jessica Schneider tied for 23rd with a 335 and Lisa Chambers was tied for 48th with a 355.
DePauw finished fourth in 2002 and third last year and improved their team score by 34 strokes over last year and 72 strokes ahead of the pace set two years ago.
The tournament marked the first time all season that the Tigers finished behind any Division III teams. Schneider finished the season with a school-record 77.69 stroke average, while Gates posted the program's second-best average at 79.27. Garriott's 80.38 average was the third-best in DePauw history. As a team, DePauw averaged a school-record 317.73 strokes per round which was nearly a 13 stroke improvement over last year.
"I am very proud of what this team has accomplised," DePauw head coach and 2004 Division III Coach of the Year Vince Lazar said. "They established their legacy as one of the best teams in DePauw athletic history.
