TIGERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH ENGINEERS
April 16, 2002
Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw senior Darcy Vannatta notched her fifth shutout of the season with a one-hit, 2-0 win over visiting Rose-Hulman in the first game of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Engineers' Tabatha Doughty broke up Vannatta's bid for a third career no-hitter with a one out single in the sixth.
DePauw scored both of its runs in the second inning as Kristin Stephen led off with a double down the right field line. Erin Murphy then reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Stephan to third. Stephan then scored on a wild pitch and Murphy moved to third on the play after a throwing error on the play at the plate. Nicole Johnson's bunt single brought home Murphy.
Vannatta (7-11) allowed just three base runners with no Rose-Hulman player advancing beyond first base. Lauren Clark slipped to 7-8 despite allowing just five hits for the Engineers.
Clark picked up the win over Vannatta in the second game as the Engineers scored a run in the first, two in the third and one in the seventh. Lynsey Hart led off the game by reaching base on a DePauw fielding error and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Sarah Bireley and Amanda Bower added RBI singles in the third and Jen Clevenger drove in a run in the seventh with a single.
The Tigers collected just a double from Angela Keslin and a single from Hilary Enyart. Clark improved to 8-8, while Vannatta dropped to 7-12.
DePauw now needs to win three of its final four games in order to qualify for next week's SCAC tournament.
