Tigers sweep series at Sewanee; equal school record win total

April 22, 2007, Sewanee, Tenn. - DePauw totaled 39 runs and 44 hits in its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep at Sewanee and, in the process, matched last year's school-record 31 wins.DePauw took the first game by a 15-0 score in five innings and the nightcap, 24-2, also in five innings.
The visiting Tigers improved to 31-3 overall and finished SCAC play at 11-1, while Sewanee dropped to 6-20 overall and 0-12 in the conference. The win in the first game also marked the 100th career victory for fifth-year head coach Bonnie Skrenta.
In the opener, the Tigers scored three in the first, eight in the third and four in the fourth in taking the win. Megan Soultz started and retired all six batters she faced, but Katherine Veatch earned the win after pitching the final three innings and allowing just one hit in improving to 6-1.
DePauw totaled 20 hits in the win led by Jessica Krueger, Rachel Gill, Carolyn Bartlett, and Laura Schlensker with three each. Chelsy Patterson, Lauren Rees and Kelly Schwerzler each added two. Rees, Schlensker and Mahon each homered in the victory.
In the nightcap, DePauw banged out a school-reord 24 hits and Gill set a Tiger individual single-game mark with five in five at-bats. Krueger added four hits and equaled a school record with five runs. Kaitlyn Davitt finished with three hits, while Patterson, Mahon, Bartlett and Schlensker each totaled two. In all, 11 different players collected base hits and 12 scored. Kristen White had two of Sewanee's six hits in the loss.
Lauren Curosh improved to 12-0 by allowing four hits in the first three innings. Morgan Cannon suffered the loss in both games and dropped to 6-20.
DePauw, the top seed in the SCAC East, returns to action at 6 p.m. CDT when it opens play in the SCAC tournament at Trinity University.Back
