Tigers Split SCAC Softball Doubleheader at Rhodes

March 20, 2010, Memphis, Tenn. — DePauw opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader split at Rhodes. The Tigers took the first game by a 7-2 score and dropped the nightcap, 6-5.
The Tigers are 7-2 overall, 1-1 in the SCAC and their 33-game SCAC win streak came to an end with the loss. Rhodes is now 19-5 overall and 1-1 in conference.
In the first game, Ashlee Anton's RBI ground out in the second gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead before Emma Minx plated pinch-runner Sam Szyska with a double and Rachel MacBeth drove in Haley Buchanan with a single. Minx also scored on the play after a Rhodes error.
DePauw extended the lead to 7-0 with three more runs in the seventh. The Lynx scored their two runs in the seventh on Rebekah Moore's two-run, bases loaded single.
MacBeth and Minx each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Allison Conn and Elise Suna each had two of the Lynx's seven hits. Megan Soultz improved to 6-1 after striking out nine and allowing just two hits in five innings. Chelsea Peters dropped to 9-3 with the loss.
In game two, Rhodes struck first as Bowen hit a leadoff homer in the second. DePauw took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Jen Kosinski's two-run homer in the fourth and made it 5-1 when Kosinski clubbed a three-run shot in the fifth.
Kelli Zomer's solo homer in the fifth cut DePauw's lead to 5-2. Jennifer Whatley led off the seventh with a single before Zomer walked and Megan Matthews loaded the bases with a single. Conn then delivered the game-winning grand slam.
Kosinski had two of DePauw's six hits and drove in all five of its runs. Rhodes totaled 10 hits led by Zomer, Conn and Whatley with two each. Bowen picked up the win after striking out 10 and allowing just two earned runs, while Soultz dropped to 7-1 with the loss.
The two teams meet in a Noon CDT doubleheader tomorrow.
