North Central Defeats Trine in NCAA Softball Regional

May 13, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — North Central scored seven unearned runs in opening two innings and that held up as the Cardinals defeated Trine, 8-6, in game two of the Greencastle, Indiana Regional in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
The Cardinals improved to 32-12 and play Ohio Northern at 2 p.m. tomorrow, while the Thunder dropped to 26-14 and face Thomas More at 10 a.m. Friday in an elimination game.
Mary Caron led off the North Central half of the first by being hit by a pitch and moved to second when the Thunder committed an error on the force play on Erin Drennan's bunt. Lauren Schramm's ground out moved the runners up a base before the next two North
Central batters drove in runs with squeeze bunts. Later in the frame, Kelli Lofgren drove in one with a single and Laura Constantine followed with a two-run base hit.
In the second, Caron led off with a single and Drennan hit a ball which got past the Trine outfielder and both scored to make it 7-0.
Trine reached the board in the fourth on Cassie Byrd's solo homer to left before the Cardinals made it 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth on Schramm's RBI single.
The Thunder closed the gap to 8-2 in the fifth when Sara Hivley led off with a triple and scored on Tori Bluhm's sacrifice fly.
Trine added four more in the sixth as Lindsay Wise scored one with a double and Hivley plated another on a ground out. Bluhm's sacrifice fly brought home Wise before Byrd's single scored Tara Sipperly.
Hivley, Andi Gasco, Byrd and Rachel Wisman each had two of Trine's 12 hits, while Carom led the Cardinals with two of their 5 hits.
Lyndsey Payne improved to 13-4 with the win, while Andi Gasco dropped to 13-7.
