Seventh-inning Rally Sends Ohio Northern to NCAA Regional Winner's Bracket Final

May 14, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Seventh-inning sacrifice flies by Kimi Blewett and Tina Mangola lifted top-seeded Ohio Northern to a 4-3 win over fourth-seeded North Central in a winner's bracket game of the Greencastle, Indiana Regional in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
The Polar Bears improved to 39-5 and advanced to Saturday's 2 p.m. winner's bracket final where they'll face the winner of the Transylvania-DePauw game. North Central dropped to 32-13 and faces Washington University in the loser's bracket tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Mandi Fought led off the Polar Bears' seventh-inning rally with a single and Jackie Mangola followed with a double. Blewett then flied out to center, scoring Fought with the tying run. Jackie Mangola advanced to third when the throw from the outfield went to the backstop. Tina Mangola then hit her sacrifice fly to center bringing home Jackie Mangola.
Ohio Northern took a 1-0 lead in the first as Mandi Fought walked and stole second. She moved to third on Blewett's fly out to right and scored on an illegal pitch.
The Cardinals countered in the bottom of the first as Mary Caron led off with a double and scored when Laura Whitfield homered to center.
The Polar Bears evened the score in the top of the third as Cortney Cash and Mandi Fought led off with bunt singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Blewett and Tina Mangola each walked forcing in Cash.
Katie Pappa led off the North Central fourth with a single and pinch-runner Justine Walker moved to second on Ashley Barry's sacrifice bunt.
Kelli Lofgren walked before Laura Constantine singled, but Walker was thrown out at the plate. Alyssa Rabulinksi then delivered an RBI single to right.
Fought and Jackie Mangola each had two of Ohio Northern's seven hits, while Caron and Pappa each had two of the Cardinals' eight hits.
Maggie Molnar improved to 13-0 with three innings of scoreless relief. Brianna Nelson dropped to 4-1 with the loss.
