Washington Slams Four Homers and Stays Alive in NCAA Regional

May 15, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Six home runs accounted for all 12 runs in the game, but it was Washington University's four which propelled the Bears to a 7-5 win over Trine in the loser's bracket of the Greencastle, Indiana Regional of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
The Bears improved to 37-10 and face Ohio Northern at Noon tomorrow with the winner taking on DePauw at 2 p.m. Trine finished its season with a 28-15 record.
Washington took a 2-0 lead in the second as Claire Voris hit a two-run homer to right center, but Trine matched that in the fourth as Sarah Belote hit a two-run shot to left center.
The tie stood until the fifth when the Bears' Ashton Hitchcock and Caitlyn Hoffman hit back-to-back solo homers. Hoffman followed it up with a three-run blast in the sixth to push the Bears' lead to 7-2.
Trine's Andi Gasco cut the lead to 7-5 with a three-run homer in the seventh. The Thunder had the potential go-ahead run at the plate, but Voris came back into the game after pitching the first five innings to record the final out.
Sara Hivley and Belote each had two of Trine's nine hits, while Voris and Hoffman each had two of Washington's eight hits. Voris improved to 21-6, while Gasco dropped to 14-8.
