April 23, 2011
April 23, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Trinity advanced to the finals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship for the first time since 2007 following a 7-1 win over Southwestern in a game played tonight at Greencastle High School.
The win was the Tigers' second over the Pirates on the day and propelled them to Sunday's 11 a.m. matchup with DePauw. Trinity dropped a 4-1 decision to DePauw earlier on Saturday and will need to defeat the host Tigers twice to claim the SCAC title.
With tonight's win, Trinity improved to 21-23, while Southwestern finished its season at 29-15.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first as Taylor Turpin and Jacqueline Rosson each reached on bunt singles and advanced a base on a wild pitch. Turpin scored from third on Kaitlyn Pavlicek's sacrifice bunt.
Trinity scored two in the bottom of the opening frame as Karen MacPherson reached on a bunt single before Megan Russell homered to left center.
The Tigers added to the lead in the third with Brooke Sanchez singling and stealing second. Chrissy Armstrong singled to the pitcher and Sanchez scored when Armstrong was caught stealing.
Trinity's Kayleigh Kinlaw reached on a walk in the fifth and pinch-runner Alyssa Gutierrez moved to third on Sanchez's infield hit and a wide throw to first. Armstrong's grounder plated Gutierrez and gave Trinity a 4-1 lead.
Three more Trinity runners crossed the plate in the sixth as pinch-hitter Teresa Greppi singled to left center and later scored on Russell's base hit. Kinlaw and Sanchez then followed with RBI infield singles.
Sanchez totaled three of Trinity's 12 hits, while MacPherson, Russell and Kinlaw each added two. The Pirates totaled six hits with Turpin and Tessa Galloway each finishing with two.
Sydney Friday improved to 8-11 with the relief win and allowed just one hit in 4 2/3 innings. Lauren Zearfoss dropped to 17-6 with the loss.
