Bondi and Steele win ITA Super Bowl
October 17, 2004
FORT MYERS, Fla. - DePauw junior Liz Bondi and freshman Elizabeth Steele held on for a thrilling 7-6 (5), 4-6, 11-9 (third-set tiebreaker) victory over Southern Nazarene's Larikah Russell and Daria Ivanova and claimed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis title at Florida Gulf Coast University. Bondi and Steele earlier claimed the ITA's Division III title, while the Southern Nazarene team was the NAIA winner.
The DePauw duo trailed 9-8 in the tiebreaker, but won the final three points to become the first Division III program (women or men) to claim the ITA Super Bowl title. The Super Bowl pits the Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior/Community College champions against one another.
Bondi and Steele now advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Michigan, November 4-7. The event involves a Division I field.
