The Inaugural Johnson-Wright Lecture in Conflict Studies to Honor Russell J. Compton presents Karen AbuZayd 63,What Would Professor Compton Have Done?
Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
FREE AND OPEN TO ALL For more on Karen Abuzayd (former Commissioner-General for the UnitedNations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the NearEast), see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Koning_AbuZayd. By inaugurating this series, Conflict Studies calls the attention of our community to a remarkable life so long lived on principles of fairness and inclusivity and on a firm belief in the possibility of a more peaceful and justly ordered world. The Conflict Studies program surveys many of the frontiers Russell Compton explored: the potential for non-violent social change, the struggle to improve the conditions of the marginalized, and an absolute commitment to fighting for the causes of peace and social justice. Each year we will invite to DePauw University someone who is living a life according to the principles for which Russell stood so solidly. Our students, our faculty and our community will have the opportunity to hear from someone who inspires by deed as well as by word. DePauw's own Karen AbuZayd, ‘63, will give the inaugural lecture on November 8, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. in Meharry Hall. Karen recently retired from her position as Commissioner-General, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. Her position at UNRWA concluded a career dedicated to working with and improving the conditions of international refugees and internally displaced persons.

Guy Walker "Horizon Lecture" by Dr. Joseph Esherick (UCSD), "China's 1911 Revolution: A Centennial Perspective"
Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
All are welcome. Professor Joseph Esherick, Distinguished Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego, is the author of Ancestral Leaves: A Family Journey Through Chinese History (U. California Press: 2011). Ancestral Leaves follows one family through six hundred years of Chinese history and brings to life the epic narrative of the nation, from the fourteenth century through the Cultural Revolution. The lives of the Ye family—“Ye” means “leaf” in Chinese—reveal the human side of the large-scale events that shaped modern China: the vast and destructive rebellions of the nineteenth century, the economic growth and social transformation of the republican era, the Japanese invasion during World War II, and the Cultural Revolution under the Chinese Communists. Joseph W. Esherick draws from rare manuscripts and archival and oral history sources to provide an uncommonly personal and intimate glimpse into Chinese family history, illuminating the changing patterns of everyday life during rebellion, war, and revolution.

LINK presents The Reliance Tour about North Korea
Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Free and open to the public. North Korea is one of the world's most tragic humanitarian disasters today - yet it is also the least known. For over 50 years, whole villages have starved, lacking basic necessities to survive. Parents continue to escape across the border to China to find food, work and better opportunities. Mothers and sisters who intended to return are ravaged by the demands of sex trafficking, leaving children to fend for themselves. For refugees in China who have managed to evade being captured, they are left with little choice but to stay hidden in underground shelters, fearing repatriation to North Korea's prison camps - notorious for raping, torturing or working its victims to death. The North Korea crisis deserves a greater response, which we believe will not occur until these stories are told and heard. LiNK hosts national awareness tours that use film, stories of refugees and creative media to educate communities about the North Korea crisis, and provide opportunities to change the lives of North Koreans through communities like ours and continue to build awareness, advocacy and funds for LiNK’s programs and rescue operations.
