The DePauw Undergraduate Communication Honors Conference presents Crain Lecturer Dr. George Lakoff (Berkeley): "The Brain, Metaphorical Thought, and Politics"

Add to Calendar8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Free and open to the public.

Linguist George Lakoff throughout his career has explored how "metaphors we live by" have influcences on how we think and the decisions we make.  In recent years he has focussed on how mental imagery affect political feelings, affiliation, and voting decisions.  For more about his work see here, and for his blog about politics, here.

Here's a description of Lakoff's current research from his faculty page at Cal Berkeley:

George Lakoff's current research covers many areas of Conceptual Analysis within Cognitive Linguistics: (i) The nature of human conceptual systems, especially metaphor systems for concepts such as time, events, causation, emotions, morality, the self, politics, etc. This also includes the study of such systems in other languages and their manifestations in linguistic form; (ii) The development of Cognitive Social Science, which applies ideas of Cognitive Semantics to the Social Sciences. It includes practical applications of cognitive linguistics to help social advocates reframe social and political issues; (iii) The implications of Cognitive Science for Philosophy, in collaboration with Mark Johnson, Chair of Philosophy at the University of Oregon; (iv) The cognitive structure, especially the metaphorical structure, of mathematics, in collaboration with Rafael Núñez of UC San Diego, Department of Cognitive Science; (v) Neural foundations of conceptual systems and language, in collaboration with Jerome Feldman, of the International Computer Science Institute, seeking to develop biologically-motivated structured connectionist systems to model both the learning of conceptual systems and their neural representations. This includes the development of a neural theory of grammar — embodied construction grammar — which precisely characterizes grammars in a notation suitable for both reduction to structured connectionist models and use in natural language processing.

"Despite numerous studies documenting the American experiences of the children of post-1960s Asian immigrants, there is very little information about those children who grew up in the Midwest. Who are these individuals growing up in America’s heartland? I based my research on the US Census data and fifty-two interviews of 1.5 and second-generation Asian Americans who grew up in the Midwest. This talk will focus on the following questions: Demographically, who are the Midwest Asian Americans? What factors influence this specific population's ethnic and/or racial identity formation? Specifically, how does a region influence identity? This talk will explore the diverse journeys of unexamined Asian American voices."

Our Journey Here: Sexuality and Shame

Add to Calendar11:15 am – 12:00 pm

A lot of women’s sexuality is built around pleasing a man. The alleviation of shame comes from, often times, the reassurance that she has pleased him. Thinking about Bei Bei’s case, is it possible or beneficial to view her as someone who fell victim to this stigma in that once this dynamic ended or was taken from her, life for her changed or maybe ended as well?

Our Journey Here: AAPI Women in the Media

Add to Calendar1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

The underrepresentation of AAPI women in the media has created a limited perception of women. Because there are limited roles that AAPI women often take, they are seen as static characters and when they veer from this portrayal, it guarantees a large interest or creates a type of dissonance. Therefore, the Bei Bei Shuai case is receiving more attention than it otherwise would have received. This event is free and open to the public.

Gender assignment surgery at birth (doctors surgically changing genitalia to fit into a specific gender: male or female) is a controversial topic regarding individuals born with ambiguous or mixed genetalia (intersex). Other biomedical and social issues concerning intersex identity will be presented and discussed by Dr. Malatino. presented by LGBT Services. Free & open to the public.

Climate Change Symposium-"Climate Change and the Open Mind"

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

"Climate Change and the Open Mind" by Barry Brickmore. Advocates of climate change action should realize that we don't necessarily need to convince the most entrenched anti-environmental ideologues. We merely need a solid majority, which can be gained by reaching two groups--1) those who are capable of being persuaded by evidence, and 2) those who are intellectually lazy, but want to appear reasonable and "open-minded." Dr. Brickmore will draw upon his experiences as both a climate change contrarian and later an advocate of climate action to explain how people in the second group convince themselves that willful ignorance is the same thing as open-mindedness. He will then present some ideas how to crack the unconquerably "open mind."

This session is free and open to all.

Photographing an Island and Its People: Vanalhaven, Maine- Information Session

Add to Calendar11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Have you ever wanted to live on an island? Join trip leaders Cindy O’Dell and Sarah Ryan to talk about going on an adventure in the Atlantic. Activities will include kayaking on the open sea, steering a lobster boat, swimming in a granite quarry, and staying at the TideWater Motel (which sits on stilts over the ocean), where the tide literally rushes under the hotel twice a day.

Set on an island off the coast of Maine, this course will provide a landscape and seascape within a rich community, to inspire us in creative photographic work. Students will have a chance to learn the field of photography and also explore a new place, its landscape, its history, and its culture through producing art. We will help students create compelling photographs while being aware of the social implications of their presence and impact on the local community. Finally, the trip will serve as an “artist’s retreat” offering students reflective time to focus solely on their photography.

Schaenen Scholar Sean Graney Presentation

Add to Calendar11:45 am – 12:30 pm

Sean Graney, Chicago Playwright and Director, will discuss his current work with DePauw students, which is to develop an original script of seven ancient Greek plays which address the Trojan War.  We intend to create a micro-society, where we can discuss ethical issues raised in the play; which, because of the script’s length, spans a wide spectrum of human ethical issues. These topics include, but are not limited to, the role of leadership, the value of life, respect for the dead, the nature of war, and responsibility to family.

Sean Graney is the Founding Director of The Hypocrites, a company where he was the Artistic Director for 14 years. He has written and adapted several plays, most recently Sophocles: Seven Sicknesses, an adaptation of all seven surviving texts of Sophocles, which had successful runs in both NY and Chicago.

Sean Graney is a Nancy Schaenen Endowed Visiting Scholar at the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics, with additional support from the Amy Broddock Fund, the Kairos Fund, the Grannon Fund, and from the Departments of Classical Studies, English, and Communication and Theatre.

Do the Math Screening

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

A 42 minute documentary from 350.org and a live-stream panel of climate experts. See the description below.

"Last year’s Do the Math tour was a whirlwind cross-country journey for Bill McKibben and our 350.org crew, with night after night of sold-out shows. At every stop, people learnedthe new math of climate change -- and emerged from the show fired up and ready to take action.

If you went to a local Do the Math event, you might have seen some folks with video cameras. Well, there’s a reason for that: we teamed up with some talented filmmakers to make the “Do the Math” movie!

And the movie is finally here: we have a 42-minute film that goes way above and beyondthe presentation you saw last year -- from the Do the Math tour to the the streets of DC to the tar sands of Canada. It’s an inspiring, beautiful, and fast-paced story that showsthe power of this growing movement."

As the latest trend estimates predict the global human population to reach 9 billion people by 2050, urbanization in the coming decades will continue to fundamentally challenge the way humans relate to the environment and to each other. Two thirds of the world’s population will live in urban areas, of which close to 3 billion people will be slum dwellers. Existing megalopolises will become increasingly denser, while new urban centers, like South Korea’s 1,500-acre New Songdo City, will spring up on reclaimed land as novel architectural forms of “smart” and “sustainable” urban design. Against this backdrop of changing landscapes and climates, new and old social, cultural, political, ecological, and economic issues abound from urban planning and design perspectives, necessitating a deeper understanding and evaluation of these new urban forms before society commits to building them on a massive scale. Drawing from the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s 2010 collaborative book, Ecological Urbanism, the New Songdo City Research Project, led by Professor Glen Kuecker, as well as seniors Dan Welsh and Kartik Amarnath, aims to explore the viability of eco-cities like Songdo as emergent models of urban sustainability through professor-student collaboration across the disciplines. Come join the project leaders, a mix of DePauw professors, and other guests, such as 2003 DePauw graduate Charlie Carlin, as we address big questions and propose fresh ideas about eco-cities and social justice.

The posters, first exhibited as part of "Moscow Design Week," are currently on display in Europe and the United States through 2013.  Sergey Serov, the committee organizer for Moscow Design Week, writes "The posters are not only a tribute to the great artist, but a reflection on the historical destiny of graphic design."  DePauw’s installation will feature the Rodchenko-inspired posters, as well as film and a number of books surveying the life of Aleksandr Rodchenko.

Who Owns Knowledge? Examining Open Access Policies

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

As more and more universities adopt an open access policy, and with the untimely passing of activist Aaron Swartz in January, the world of publishing academic work has come into the spotlight. The discourse on this topic is growing, and it's time to take a look at the ways in which knowledge is used and shared. Few students realize that after they leave an academic institution, they no longer have access to the journals and articles they once did. But should intellectual property be a public commodity? What are the differences between the current publishing structure and open access? And how would this kind of policy look at DePauw? Join Alan Boyd, director of libraries at Oberlin College, Ada Emmett, visiting professor of library sciences at Purdue University, and DePauw Professor Kelsey Kauffman in a panel discussion on the ways we create and share knowledge. Free and open to the public
