Open Forum: US Default Crisis

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Thursday morning we will wake-up to the news that we have either crossed the threshold of default or we have delayed the issue for several more months.  The purpose of the forum is to provide the opportunity for our community to engage in open converstation about the political and financial predicaments we face.  The forum will not have a set list of speakers, but will aim for a spontaneous, open venue for academic discussion to take place.  What type of questions should we be asking?  What big topics/issues are before us?  What lines of analysis should we engage?  What role does higher education play in weathering the perfect storm of the default threshold?

This event is free and open to ideas and the public.

Asian Studies presents Indian filmmaker Pankaj Rishi Kumar showing his documentary "In God's Land"

Add to Calendar4:15 pm – 6:15 pm

Free and open to the public.

Please join the filmmaker Pankaj Rishi Kumar for a showing and discussion of "In God's Land".

Here's Cho Young-Jung's synopsis of the film for the Busan Film Festival:

After taming a former wasteland through hard work and sweat and creating  a community, the settlers start living there. The mythical birth of their village God Sudalai Swami unfolds the village’s unique journey to fight the oppression of the ‘big’ Vanamamalai Temple. Now that the clergy owns the land, the settlers are reduced to being tenant farmers and must make way for redevelopment after the land is sold off for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). A dispute over god’s land begins. is not simply about the fight between the priests and the farmers. Using animation it recounts the history of the land and satirizes the exploitation perpetuated by religion and class distinction. The film looks at the land within the larger issue of development, forcing us to recognize the totalitarian attitude of the ideals of development, ostensibly to bring economic prosperity but rarely a benefit to real users. But the film’s most interesting element is the people living on this god’s land. Instead of fighting the temple or government, they accept this dire reality and try to find comfort in god’s will, perhaps because for them it is still the land of god.

Dogs of Doubtful Origin

Add to Calendar10:00 am – 4:00 pm

In a quirky spin on the traditional sabbatical exhibition, sculpture professor Lori Miles invites six of her former students, all recent MFA recipients, to create a massive, collaborative exhibition.  Though sparked by themes central to Miles’ own work, the exhibit will be conceived, designed, and executed by all six artists collectively.  Overtly exploring the vertical exchange of information from teacher to student, this project also delves deeply into horizontal knowledge; those cultural memes that spread laterally through transfer, imitation, and replication.  Dogs of Doubtful Origin refers both to an incorrect research loop referenced by cryptozoologists and to the ambiguous artistic ownership of the exhibit itself.
