Prindle Cinema: These Birds Walk

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

The first Prindle event of the semester!  Join us on February 11, 2014 at 7:30 PM for a screening of These Birds Walk in Watson Forum.

Documentary filmmakers Omar Mullick and Bassam Turiq set out to make a film about Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi whose response was “If you want to find me, look to ordinary people.” These Birds Walk provides an up-close view of the life of children on the streets of Pakistan who seek refuge in the clinics set up by Edhi’s foundation. It incorporates the conflicts and challenges that these children face while emphasizing their innocence, hopeful spirit, and vast potential. A powerful story coupled with striking cinematography and a poignant violin score, it’s no wonder that the film has received nothing but overwhelmingly positive reviews.

“Even though Tariq and Mullick’s film takes place halfway around the world from most of the people who will ever see this film, it is a study into the universal need for a home.”

Activist Artist Harry Belafonte gives the Russell Compton Lecture

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Free and open to the public.

The DePauw Conflict Studies Program is proud to host a return visit to DePauw from Harry Belafonte, first winner of the Nelson Mandela Courage Award. (Belafonte gave an Ubben Lecture in the fall of 2002). For a full history of his achievements as an activist and a musical, theater, and film artist, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Belafonte. Since his success as a performer, Belafonte has at the same time devoted himself to civil and human rights issues, focusing in particular on the United States and Africa. His much-anticipated memoir “My Song” was released in October 2011, and with it HBO debuted the critically acclaimed bio-documentary Sing Your Song. The film chronicles the life and times of one of America’s most groundbreaking entertainers and social activists through his own words, eye-witness accounts, FBI files and archival footage, and seeks to answer two profound questions about who we are, especially as artists and what meaning we find in our own commitments. Harry Belafonte has been honored many times with honorary university degrees and other honors from diverse groups: the American Jewish Congress, the NAACP, the City of Hope, Fight for Sight, The Urban League, The National Conference of Black Mayors, the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, the ACLU, the State Department, the Boy Scouts of America, Hadassah International, and the Peace Corps. Among his awards are The Albert Einstein Award from Yeshiva University, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Prize, the Acorn Award from the Bronx Community College for his work with children, Kennedy Center Honors for Excellence in the Performing Arts and the National Medal of Arts, bestowed by President Clinton for his contributions to our nation's cultural life.

Marian Osteopathic

Add to Calendar11:45 am – 12:30 pm

The Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine will be visiting to talk about the school, admissions, and osteopathic medicine. This is the first year of operation for MUCOM. It has a beautiful teaching facility in Indianapolis and will be doing its clinical rotations mostly with the St. Vincent Hospital system. There has been a great deal of cooperation between MUCOM and the Indiana School of Medicine, which is a very good thing for students from Indiana. With MUCOM in operation there are a third more seats in medical school each year.

If you are unfamiliar with osteopathic medicine I would encourage you to attend this session and ask questions. The medical training in osteopathic schools is comparable to what you find in allopathic schools and osteopaths are generally eligible for the same residencies as allopaths.
