Classical Studies Lecture - Prof. Richard Talbert on Roman Map

Add to Calendar5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Richard Talbert, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be the guest lecturer as the Department of Classical Studies presents the 2014 Kairos Lecture Series.

On Tuesday, March 11, he will present "The Peutinger Map's Place in Roman Cartography" in the Olin Auditorium, beginning at 5:30.  The event is free and open to the public.

Romans - more than any other ancient people - came to realize that maps are not mere factual records, but also value-laden documents.  Then, as now, maps could even be designed to promote and reinforce values, from peace and civilization to unashamed pride in conquest and entitlement to world-rule.  Scholars recently have developed more sensitive and satisfying approaches to interpreting the cartographic products of pre-modern societies: this lecture deepens insight into the particular case of the Romans.  Richard Talbert reconsiders the thinking behind the immense Marble Plan of the city of Rome.  Above all, he exposes powerful meaning and purpose in the so-called 'Peutinger Map', an elongated, astonishingly rich, Roman world-map.  He constructs for this underrated masterpiece (which is 22 ft. long!) a compelling fresh context that is non-scientific. He concludes with brief consideration of the map's possible long-term impact on Christian mapmaking through to the Renaissance.

This lecture will be of interest to anyone who is interested in ancient cartography, maps as carriers of ideology, maps as art, digital humanities, Roman Empire and Roman culture.

A fabulous replica of the actual map will be on display!  A digital database of the map can be found here:  http://peutinger.atlantides.org/map-a/

Screening of:Resilience: Protecting Today on Tuesday

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

The documentary follows a girl from Rikuzentakata, one of the cities that was hit hardest by the earthquake and tsunami, and the inspiring accounts she collected of the survivors she encountered in her city in the midst of the chaotic aftermath. It will tell you what people were like at that time.

In addition to the documentary screening, we will hold a photo exhibit of the Great East Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami. The photos will be displayed in the UB lobby and hub, starting Sunday afternoon until March 11. You will see the actual phenomenon surrounding people of those days.As students from Japan, we would like to share this opportunity with the wider DePauw and Greencastle communities to raise awareness, as well as reflect on, the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami. We hope that you will join us in thinking progressively about how we can all move forward, as we increasingly face predicaments in saving our livelihoods from natural disasters in all walks of the world.

This event is sponsored by DePauw Student Government, The Environmental Fellows Program, The Asian Studies Program, The Japanese Language Program, The Intercultural Life Office, and the International Student Association. The event is free and open to the public. We will be serving Japanese refreshments.

Classical Studies Lecture - Prof. Richard Talbert on Roads in Roman Imperial Culture

Add to Calendar2:20 pm – 3:20 pm

Richard Talbert, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be the guest lecturer as the Department of Classical Studies presents the 2014 Kairos Lecture Series.

On Wednesday, March 12, he will present "Roads in Roman Imperial Culture" in the Roy O. West Library Media Classroom, beginning at 2:20.  The event is free and open to the public.

The empire's vast highway system is a distinctive feature of Roman civilization that the peoples in the lands which Rome once ruled have typically always admired and exploited.  We today in North America are admirers too -- with our own Interstate system, on which we move ourselves and our goods so freely and conveniently.  Moreover, we take it for granted that the Romans themselves had consciously regarded their highways as a system just as we with our scientific outlook view it, and that the freedom of movement they permitted within their empire was something quie normal in history.  This lecture challenges these assumptions as likely to need re-thinking.  It demonstrates on the one hand that the Romasn in fact show no sign of having conceived their highways as a system or coherent network -- a huge investment and resource that emperors might well have boasted about, but for a variety of possible reasons never did.  On the other hand, what emerges starkly when we apply a global perspective to Rome's attitude to movement by its subjects is how liberal it appears by comparison with the control exerted by such other pre-modern states noted for their highways as China, Japan, and the Inca.  Altogether, this lecture offers some striking and unexpected fresh perspectives on the Roman empire and on Romans' thinking about highways, their subject peoples, and indeed the known world.
