Delta Gamma Foundation Lecture by Pashon Murray

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The 2016 Dorothy Garret Martin Lecturer on Ethics and Values will be Pashon Murray speaking on Composting's Social And Environmental Impact Within The Circular Economy. Murray garnered national attention and admiration after she partnered with Ford Motor Company to create a spoof of this Cadillac commercial. Cadillac faced enormous backlash and criticism for that commercial which culminated in this spoof from Ford starring Murray. Here is a brief bio. In 2010 Murray co-founded Detroit Dirt, a local composting and biomass collection company that specializes in providing compost and biomass solutions for the metro Detroit community. Detroit Dirt’s closed-loop model process was designed by Murray to help revitalize Detroit. In 2012, she launched Sustainable Integrations (SI), a Detroit-based 501(c)(3) organization that combats environmental deterioration through learning, educating, leading, and serving the public with programs and services on sustainable land utilization, ecosystem remediation, renewable energy practices, and improved waste management. In May of 2014, Newsweek named Murray as one of its “13 Women in Business to Bet On.”Murray is now a leading figure in sustainability solutions with an eye toward urban renewal and was one of a handful of people that met at the White House last month to organize and plan the White House's recent call to action regarding healthy soil and composting.

Aikido

Add to Calendar12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself. #Wellness

Add to Calendar4:15 pm – 6:00 pm

Mohammad was a Prindle Ethics Intern and on the 2013 National Champion Ethics Bowl team while at DePauw, and completed majors in Conflict Studies and Urban Policy.  Currently he is doing field research in the Bronx about immigrant housing issues for his PhD in Land Economy at the University of Cambridge. He won a Gates Scholarship to fund his post-grad work: http://www.depauw.edu/news-media/latest-news/details/29607/

Mohammad on his research project:  I am researching how undocumented migrants from West African access housing in the Bronx, New York.  I am focused on Ghanaians, the fast growing African nationality in New York City, where I am comparing documented and undocumented members of this community to discern how legal status influences housing outcomes.  The aim of my research is to understand how institutional rules/barriers, social networks, and strategic behavior play a key role in the housing market.  Specifically, I seek to uncover how informality in housing allocation operates for groups on the margins or outside of the bounds of legality.

Methodologically, I am pursuing a mixed methods approach:  I am using quantitative data from the US Census, Dept. of Homeland Security, and other databases and I am finding qualitative data through in depth interviews with tenants, landlords, and community organizations.  I am also relying on various ethnographic methods, including participant observations, as additional means to gain access to key communities.

#Wellness

Freedom, Control, and Security in Cyber Space: US, Russia, China

Add to Calendar4:15 pm – 6:00 pm

Free and open to the public.

The three featured panelists are Sarah Oates (Univ of Maryland--http://merrill.umd.edu/about-merrill/staff-faculty/sarah-oates/), Jack Bratich (Rutgers--https://comminfo.rutgers.edu/directory/jbratich/index.html), and Shanthi Kalathil (Georgetown--http://explore.georgetown.edu/people/sak95/)

In the present Cyber Age, when social media have been proclaimed powerful grassroots tools for political change, but are often coopted by the state apparatus as means of suppression and control, it is important to take stock: what is the real dynamic between freedom and Internet access? Are they equivalent? Does a free Internet presuppose a democratic state? And vice versa, is censorship or state control equivalent to political suppression? What are the ramifications of our (in)ability to access the Internet for us, both as users and voters?

To approach these and similar questions in a critical way, Russian Studies, Asian Studies, and the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media present a panel of expert visitors to discuss the comparative politics, economics and cultures of the Internet in Russia, China, and the US.

Organizer: Nightenhelser, Keith E Convocations
