One in every three bites of food we eat is made possible by bees yet their numbers are declining due to pesticide use, habitat loss and climate change. In collaboration with Earth Charter Indiana and the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Save the Bees Indiana raises awareness about the plight of honeybees and pollinators through art, advocacy, and action. We have made classroom presentations to more than 30 area schools (reaching around 1800 students) about the importance of pollinators." This event is free and open to the public.

Rebuilding Trust by Asking Uncomfortable Questions by Anna Sale, host and managing editor of WNYC's Death, Sex & Money.

Journalist Anna Sale saw this close-up while covering the Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street, political campaigns and voter attitudes. She tracks her own journey from disenchanted political reporter to the host and creator of a podcast that tries to restore our sense of connection to each other by getting very, very personal.

Fiction: The Empathy Machine by Helen Phillips, MFA, Novelist and Assistant Professor at Brooklyn College.

A mother chains her handicapped son to a tree. A man burglarizes a home and punches the lady of the house in the face. A girl kills a boy with a rock. Such horrifying scenarios demand moral outrage, yet when authors George Saunders, Sarah Shun-lien Bynum, and Colson Whitehead convey us deep into the perspectives of the fictional characters implicated in these acts, we discover that each situation is far more emotionally nuanced and ethically complex than we assumed.

Recent psychological studies suggest that reading fiction can improve one’s theory of mind, enhancing the ability to imagine one’s way into the minds and bodies of others. Imagination is the basis of empathy, and empathy is the basis of ethics. Reading fiction forces us to experience difficult situations that might otherwise feel distant and irrelevant to our lives. What might we ourselves do if pushed to this or that extreme?

I will read from recent work and explore the ways I grapple with ethical questions as a writer of fiction.

This event is free and open to all. A campus shuttle will depart from the Union Building bus stop 10 minutes before the lecture and return immediately following.

Communiversity: French Impressionism and the Music of Claude Cymerman and Friends

Add to Calendar6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

6:30 p.m. – Part I: Impressionistic painting class, wine and hors d’oeuvres

8 p.m. – Part II: French music, wine and pastries

Music on the Square, 21 N. Indiana

French Impressionism in art and in music aimed to capture glimpses of life's fleeting moments -- the

vibrancy of the light at sunrise, the serenity of a lily pond, or the conversations between wind and

waves -- a celebration of the world moment-by-moment.

Join us at Music on the Square for a full evening of all things French or drop in a little later to listen

to the music of local Frenchman, Claude Cymerman and friends:

PARTS I AND II ($40):  Impressionistic Painting Class, French Wine and Hors d'oeuvres

6:30 PM Arrival -- Sip a Kir Royale, nibble on cheeses and crostini, view works curated by the Peeler

Art Center, and create your own impressionistic masterpiece guided by Wine and Canvas of

Indianapolis. And, now that you're feeling like a true Parisian...

PART II ($15):  French Music, Wine and Pastries

8 PM Arrival -- Linger into the starry night accompanied by fine wine and French music performed

by a trio of pianists, including our own Claude Cymerman and Anthony Weinstein, joined by guest

artist Emile Naoumoff visiting from Paris via Indiana University.

Aikido

Add to Calendar12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself. #Wellness

Yoga

Add to Calendar5:30 pm – 6:45 pm

This is a level one/level two Hatha Yoga - Vinyasa Flow class. In each class there will always be instruction in how to move into poses (asanas) in order to arrive at proper alignment (hatha), as well as continuous movement linking poses (vinyasa). As the school year progresses and participants become more familiar with the poses we'll incorporate more flow linking asanas. The coordination of breath and movement will be emphasized, as well as the non-competitive nature of yoga practice and its relation to meditation. The use of props to assist in proper alignment is encouraged, and poses will progress from basics to more challenging moves, so that beginners as well as those with more yoga experience can participate at an appropriate level for them.  #Wellness

This is a level one/level two Hatha Yoga - Vinyasa Flow class. #Wellness

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS chronicles the adventures of four vampire roommates trying to get by in a modern world that's not always hospitable to the undead. Jermain Clement and Taika Waititi, creators of the HBO hit series "Flight of the Conchords," co-wrote, co-directed, and co-star in this hilarious send-up in which an endearingly unhip quartet of friends reveal to us or, rather, to the documentary crew that's filming them, the details of their daily-make and nightly-routine.
