  6. The Physics Club and Chemistry Department welcome back a 2000 DePauw Graduate, Keoki Seu to talk about "Seeing is believing: Investigating Magnetic Nanostructures with Light." The talk is open to the public, although a RSVP to tamarakjonaas@depauw.edu is requested as lunch will be provided. Magnetic storage follows a rule similar to Moore's law, where the density of hard disks increases exponentially over time. This means that the area of each bit is decreasing at a similar rate and we soon will be reaching a point where a magnetic bit is a few atoms thick. I will introduce laser techniques that we use to probe magnetic storage bits, particularly in the time-domain which allows us to observe how fast one can switch a magnetic bit. The time scale for flipping a bit is 100 picoseconds (ps = 10^-12 s). I will also talk about using x- rays to probe magnetic systems and nanostructures, with some focus on using the short wavelength of the x-rays to image nanostructures. The resolution that we can image is on the order of 50 nanometers (nm = 10^-9 m). In the future we hope to combine these techniques, allowing us to image magnetization reversal on the ultrafast timescale.
