Mariposas Sin Fronteras/Border Studies Program

Mariposas Sin Fronteras, Tucson, Arizona

Speaker

Karolina Lopez: Karolina López is a transgender woman who was held in custody at a detention center for immigrants in Eloy, Arizona for three years, where she suffered discrimination and sexual abuse on account of her gender identity. Three years after leaving detention and winning her asylum case, Karolina has become a leader in the LGBTQ movement of undocumented people and has defended the rights of LGBTQ people detained in immigration detention.  Karolina, an organizer with Mariposas sin Fronteras, migrated to the United States from Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico, where she was born. Forced to leave her home and family due to sexual orientation and gender identity, Karolina migrated to the Unites States fleeing homophobia and transphobia. When Karolina arrived in the Unites States she found an often-hostile, dangerous reality similar to the one she left. After being a victim of a violent crime in 2009, Karolina found herself trapped by the immigration system where she experienced a series of human rights abuses.  Karolina’s presentation will tell the story of her lived, migrant experience. Students will learn about gender identity and transphobia, the challenges and limitations immigrants experience when applying for asylum, the environments inside immigration detention centers, and the power of community organizing.
