Photocatalysis with Visible Light 4:00 pm

Light can be considered a clean, renewable, and inexpensive “reagent” for chemical synthesis.  Nevertheless, most conventional methods for the photochemical synthesis of organic compounds requires the use of specialized photochemical equipment that is capable of generating high energy ultraviolet light and containing it safely.  This is a practical impediment that has prevented the wide adoption of photochemical synthesis in the fine chemicals industry.  We have developed a strategy that exploits the reactivity of transition metal photocatalysts in order to perform a variety of synthetically useful cycloaddition reactions using visible wavelengths of light.  By enabling the use of direct sunlight rather than high energy artificial UV light, we hope to establish a new, environmentally responsible approach to synthetic organic photochemistry.

Chemistry IS a Liberal Art:  An Argument for the Unity of Science and the Humanities 7:30 pm

Over fifty years ago, C. P. Snow warned that science and the humanities were becoming balkanized into "two cultures" of non-overlapping and somewhat hostile intellectual communities.  Even as the rate of technological progress continues to accelerate, and as scientific issues become increasingly important in American political life, the segregation of the sciences from the humanities is training a generation of scientists to be unconcerned with the social and moral ramifications of their research. It is also teaching a generation of humanities scholars to be disconnected from the increasing complexity of the modern world.  This lecture argues that the importance of a scientifically rigorous liberal arts education is vital for the well-being of American democracy.
