"The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier's Education at West Point, at Oxford and on the battlefields in Afghanistan," a talk by Craig Mullaney
Add to Calendar8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Free and open to the public.
At West Point Craig Mullaney graduated second in his class, he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, led an infantry platoon trapped in a deadly firefight in Afghanistan. and returned from the war to teach at the US Naval Academy and then work in the Obama administration.
His book "The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier's Education" is a memoir not just of his time at West Point and at war in Afghanistan. Mullaney's memoir is about his personal life as well as his experiences as a soldier at war. He writes of the pain of betrayal when his father abandons the family and about the joy of falling in love while at Oxford and trying to keep the relationship alive when he goes off to war. Craig Mullaney's book has been praised by writers and military leaders, including Thomas Ricks, the author of the New York Times bestseller Fiasco about the Iraq war. "Craig Mullaney's memoir is a thoughtful, introspective work reminiscent of the great British memoirs of World War I. A thousand years from now, historians wanting to know about life in America after 9/11 would do well to look at this book. Equally imporant, it is an enjoyable and honest book."

Mind Space: Maximalism in Contrasts
Add to Calendar10:00 am – 4:00 pm
September 7 - December 7, 2012
This exhibition of mixed media installations portrays a new realm of artistic expression. Mind Space introduces 4 Chinese abstract artists who convey the concept of "Maximalism" to a global audience. Maximalism is a term coined by curator Dr. Gao Minglu, one of the world's leading scholars of Chinese contemporary art. Maximalism expresses the meditative mind of the abstract artist during the creation process, emphasizing the spiritual experience of art-making. The creations of Zhu Jinshi, Zhang Yu, Lei Hong, and He Xiangyu are a dialogue between artist and nature, an inventive response to a rapidly changed material world.
Mind Space is curated by Gao Minglu and developed by Pearl Lam Galleries, Shanghai, China with tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

Sigma Lambda Gamma Presents: Elotera at DePauw
Add to Calendar11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Come join the Women of Sigma Lambda Gamma as we sell fruit cups, elote (corn) cups, and chicharrónes in the traditional Mexican style. Elote is the Mexican name for corn on the cob and chicharrónes are fried pork rinds. They are a popular street food in Mexico. For example, in Chicago, and the southern U.S., it is customary to consume elotes on a stick, or by grasping the husk of the cob that has been pulled down to form a "handle". Condiments such as salt, chili powder, butter, cheese, lemon juice or lime juice, mayonnaise, and sour cream (or crema) are usually added to the elote. The fresh fruit is topped with chili pepper, and the chicharrónes are topped with Valentina (hot sauce). The women of Sigma Lambda Gamma wants the DePauw students to experience a Mexican traditional snack. All proceedings gained will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Mind Space: Maximalism in Contrasts
Add to Calendar1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Nuestros Paises/GC Family Cookout
Add to Calendar3:00 pm – 7:00 pm
In order to celebrate the different Latin American countries that celebrate Hispanic Heritage month this cookout will bring a little bit of Latin America to campus. The barbecue will feature different meats like arrachera and lomo traditionally used in Latin American dishes. There will also be other icon meals like red rice and tortillas, as well as tasty desserts. This event will help to give a little taste of the Latin American culture through traditional dishes. A board will have facts about the country to teach students a little about them. We are currently building a relationship with the Greencastle Latino families and will invite the families to help us with the cookout as the families have enjoyed helping DePauw students and appreciating us for their assistance. Highly successful as of Fall 2011.

Add to Calendar2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Sociologist Jodi O'Brien, Seattle University, will be in residence in the Women's Center. Stop by to talk to Dr. O'Brien about anything. All are welcome!
Jodi O’Brien is a Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work. Her teaching and research focus on everyday forms of difference and discrimination, and the social psychological and institutional practices that perpetuate prejudice and inequalities. Her books include The Production of Reality; Social Prisms; and Everyday Inequalities. She is also the editor of the Encyclopedia of Gender and Society and currently edits the sociology journal, Contexts. Her most recent articles are on the cultural politics of religion and sexuality with an emphasis on queer Christians and the congregations that support them.
In 2010, Professor O'Brien was hired as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Marquette University. Shortly after the hire took effect, it was revoked. The university president cited a lack of fit between O'Brien's scholarship on sexuality and gay marriage and the university's Jesuit Catholic mission as the reason for this action. The decision resulted in widespread outrage and protest and was the subject of intense media focus for several weeks following the event. Many observers believed that the real reason for the decision was intervention by the Milwaukee Archbishop and conservative Catholic activists who opposed the hire because O'Brien is an open lesbian.

Queer Frontiers: Crucibles, Scapegoats, and Possibilities
Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
In this post Ellen, post Will-and-Grace, post L Word, post Queer as Folk world, who are we? The cultural politics of recent decades suggest that LGBTQ identities and issues are the source of both the promise of gender and sexual justice and also the threat of a nation in decline. We are simultaneously crucibles of progress and scapegoats of perversion. We may come out over and over again, but do we really ever come “home”? When we do, what does that “home” look like? In these remarks I comment on the continual struggle for queer inclusion and the individual and cultural contradictions this struggle reveals. How are we grappling with the contradictions and where is the friction taking us?

Add to Calendar1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Electoral Dysfunction & Live Broadcast of Presidential Debate
Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Eye-opening, irreverent and nonpartisan, ELECTORAL DYSFUNCTION is for Americans across the political spectrum who want their votes to count.
After discovering that the right to vote is missing from the Constitution, political humorist Mo Rocca sets out on a road trip to see how voting works—and doesn’t work—in America. He heads to Indiana, home to some of the strictest election laws in the country, and meets Republican Dee Dee Benkie and Democrat Mike Marshall, who take him inside their efforts to get out every vote. As he progresses on his journey, Mo searches for the Electoral College; investigates the debate over Voter ID and voter fraud; critiques ballot design with Todd Oldham; and explores the case of a former felon who was sentenced to ten years in prison—for the crime of voting.

Gypsies, or more appropriately, the Romani people, are a broadly dispersed ethnic group living among other ethnic groups throughout Europe and the world. Pianist May Phang, violinist Dan Rizner, and cellist Eric Edberg explore "music and the other" with compositions by Robert Schumann (1810-1856), Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979), and Libby Larsen (b. 1950). Schumann suffered from mental illness and in that sense was "the other." He also was an influential critic who wrote with disdain for the "Philistines" ("others" to him) who couldn't comprehend or appreciate what he saw as true art. Rebecca Clarke was marginalized as a "woman" composer, the "other" in a male-dominated classical music culture. Libby Larsen, who came of age during the feminist revolution, is regarded as one of the major classical composers of our time, no longer a "woman composer." For years, many American classical musicians saw popular idioms as a threat and treated them with disdain. Larsen's piece "Three for the Road" is inspired by Boogie-woogie and represents classical music embracing what it once regarded as "the other."
