Mind Space: Maximalism in Contrasts
Add to Calendar10:00 am – 4:00 pm
September 7 - December 7, 2012
This exhibition of mixed media installations portrays a new realm of artistic expression. Mind Space introduces 4 Chinese abstract artists who convey the concept of "Maximalism" to a global audience. Maximalism is a term coined by curator Dr. Gao Minglu, one of the world's leading scholars of Chinese contemporary art. Maximalism expresses the meditative mind of the abstract artist during the creation process, emphasizing the spiritual experience of art-making. The creations of Zhu Jinshi, Zhang Yu, Lei Hong, and He Xiangyu are a dialogue between artist and nature, an inventive response to a rapidly changed material world.
Mind Space is curated by Gao Minglu and developed by Pearl Lam Galleries, Shanghai, China with tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

Film Screening for the film "Crash"
Add to Calendar6:00 pm – 8:15 pm
"Crash" tells interlocking stories of whites, blacks, Latinos, Koreans, Iranians, cops and criminals, the rich and the poor, the powerful and powerless, all defined in one way or another by racism. All are victims of it, and all are guilty of it. Sometimes, yes, they rise above it, although it is never that simple. Their negative impulses may be instinctive, their positive impulses may be dangerous, and who knows what the other person is thinking? This screening is an opportunity for members of the DePauw community to learn and discuss their own experiences while talking about social injustices in contemporary society.

Compton Film Series: APACHE 8
Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
For 30 years, the all-female Apache 8 unit has protected their reservation from fire and also responded to wildfires around the nation. This group of firefighters, which recently became co-ed, soon earned the reputation of being fierce, loyal and dependable—and tougher than their male colleagues. Facing gender stereotypes and the problems that come with life on the impoverished reservation, the women became known as some of the country’s most elite firefighters. From director Sande Zeig and executive producer Heather Rae (Cherokee), APACHE 8 combines archival footage and present-day interviews and focuses primarily on four women from different generations of Apache 8 crewmembers, who speak tenderly and often humorously of hardship, loss, family, community and pride in being a firefighter. The women are separated from their families, face tribe initiation, and struggle to make a living in a community ravaged by unemployment and substance abuse. But while the women may have initially set out to try and earn a living in their economically challenged community, they quickly discover an inner strength and resilience that speaks to their traditions and beliefs as Native women.Free & open to all!#MIL #ComptonCenter #WomensStudies

Countering Persistent Black-White Disparity in the US: Affirmative Action, Multiculturalism, and the Call for Reparations
Add to Calendar6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Professor Kellin Chandler Stanfield, Economics and Management, will give a lecture entitled "Countering Persistent Black-White Disparity in the US: Affirmative Action, Multiculturalism, and the Call for Reparations." Black Americans continue to experience relative deprivation to white Americans across several substantive outcomes. School integration, the Civil and Voting Rights Acts, and affirmative action were social policy designed to provide social, economic, and political franchise to subaltern US racial populations. In addition, affirmative action was to provide redress for accumulated disadvantage under sanctioned oppression. However, countering the legacy of disparate opportunity with current outcomes fails to address a major source of persistent disparate material outcomes: accumulated wealth differentials. Moreover, affirmative action was altered to the promotion of diversity while market discrimination intensified and schooling discrimination within and among schools persisted. Thus, the integration of schools, affirmative action, the perception of general equal opportunity, and the hypothesis of black disfunctionality became enabling myths for ongoing discrimination and persistent disparity. A wealth redistributive policy coupled with uniformly provided demanding and rigorous curricula and measures to prevent differential market outcomes due to discrimination is needed to provide redress and counter persistent black-white disparity.

(Social Justice) Soul Sistahs: The Weight of Domestic Violence
Add to Calendar6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
This event will be a discussion on the domestic violence actions that have been portrayed in the media. Is domestic violence not taken as seriously when the persons involved are famous? If it’s a publicity stunt is then okay, when women are suffering from this on a daily basis? Does this then lesson the seriousness of their actions as opposed to an average man who commits the same acts. Do people sympathize more for these men who are “amired” and “looked up to”?

September 7 - December 7, 2012

Mind Space: Maximalism in Contrasts
Add to Calendar1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Film Screening: "Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Actions"
Add to Calendar6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Nearly all Native American lands in the U.S. face grave environmental threats – toxic waste, strip mining, oil drilling and nuclear contamination. But a handful of activists are fighting back.
Filmed against some of America’s most spectacular backdrops, from Alaska to Maine and Montana to New Mexico, Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action profiles the against-all-odds struggles of Native American leaders who are taking on powerful energy companies and government agencies to protect the environment for all Americans. A moving tribute to the power of grassroots organizing, Homeland is also a call-to-action against the current dismantling of thirty years of environmental laws.
After the screening a short discussion will be facilitated by the program planners
This event is part of Native/Indigenous American Heritage Month, and is free and open to the public.
