Percussion at Peeler
Add to Calendar6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
In conjunction with the exhibition Mind Space: Maximalism in Contrasts, the DePauw Percussion Studio presents contemporary solo and chamber works for percussion, composed and improvised, in a non-traditional concert setting. This year's theme is music and culture of China, to co-ordinate with the contemporary Chinese art works in the exhibition. Music by Chen Yi, Yiu-kwong Chung, and Tan Dun will be included, as well as an improvisation inspired by Tan Dun's Paper Concerto, Water Concerto and Earth Concerto. The performance will also include students from China presenting Tai Chi, poetry, calligraphy, and the erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument. Please join us for a reception of Chinese food afterward.

ArtsFest 2012 mulls over "Art and Other" and the DePauw Orchestra, directed by Orcenith Smith, will find that intersection of terms by presenting some family concert favorites, including a Halloween treat or two. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (from Disney's original Fantasia) is one such "Other" worldly work on the program, with Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" a children's concert favorite. Also on the program is music from "Spiderman".

Gypsies, or more appropriately, the Romani people, are a broadly dispersed ethnic group living among other ethnic groups throughout Europe and the world. Wherever they live, they are considered to be "others," and the foreignness of their music and customs has inspired classical composers to write countless pieces in imitation of and homage to these exotic sounds. Join us for a passion-filled evening of gypsy music.Gregory Ristow, director.

Pianist May Phang, violinist Dan Rizner, and cellist Eric Edberg explore "music and the other" with compositions by Robert Schumann (1810-1856), Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979), and Libby Larsen (b. 1950). Schumann suffered from mental illness and in that sense was "the other." He also was an influential critic who wrote with disdain for the "Philistines" ("others" to him) who couldn't comprehend or appreciate what he saw as true art. Rebecca Clarke was marginalized as a "woman" composer, the "other" in a male-dominated classical music culture. Libby Larsen, who came of age during the feminist revolution, is regarded as one of the major classical composers of our time, no longer a "woman composer." For years, many American classical musicians saw popular idioms as a threat and treated them with disdain. Larsen's piece "Three for the Road" is inspired by Boogie-woogie and represents classical music embracing what it once regarded as "the other."
