The Inaugural Johnson-Wright Lecture in Conflict Studies to Honor Russell J. Compton presents Karen AbuZayd ‘63,“What Would Professor Compton Have Done?”

Add to Calendar7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

FREE AND OPEN TO ALL     For more on Karen Abuzayd (former Commissioner-General for the UnitedNations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the NearEast), see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Koning_AbuZayd.      By inaugurating this series, Conflict Studies calls the attention of our community to a remarkable life so long lived on principles of fairness and inclusivity and on a firm belief in the possibility of a more peaceful and justly ordered world.     The Conflict Studies program surveys many of the frontiers Russell Compton explored: the potential for non-violent social change, the struggle to improve the conditions of the marginalized, and an absolute commitment to fighting for the causes of peace and social justice.      Each year we will invite to DePauw University someone who is living a life according to the principles for which Russell stood so solidly. Our students, our faculty and our community will have the opportunity to hear from someone who inspires by deed as well as by word.      DePauw's own Karen AbuZayd, ‘63, will give the inaugural lecture on November 8, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. in Meharry Hall. Karen recently retired from her position as Commissioner-General, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.  Her position at UNRWA concluded a career dedicated to working with and improving the conditions of international refugees and internally displaced persons.
