Popcorn and Pop Culture: Satire in the Media

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 5:15 pm

Join the Prindle Interns and Jonathan Nichols-Pethick, Professor of Communication and Theater, for an informal group discussion about satire in pop culture and ethics in our society today. We’ll focus on the well-known Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert’s recent controversial tweet and how his intentions – to get at the nuances of the new Washington Redskins Foundations for Original Americans – went awry.

As a result, the  #CancelColbert trend has come about as a means to draw attention to and decrease the racism that still exists today.  “The problem with the ‘Colbert Report’ joke is that when you use language rooted in oppression, it feels oppressive whether it was meant to be funny or not” (Prois).  Where do we draw the line in satire when humanity becomes the punchline of the joke?  Local popcorn from D&S Kettle Corn will be provided as a light snack!
