Aikido

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), beginning in early 20th century Japan.  Often referred to as the "Art of Peace', aikido techniques include a variation of throws, joint locks and pins.  Defined as the "Way of Harmonious Spirit", aikido relies on belnding, turning and entering movements which use the energy of an opponent's attack against him/her.  In aikido, our mindset is of neutralizing an attack without felling our opponent by force or with mal intent.  The art is for all ages and genders no matter the level of fitness or physical strength.  Progression depends on an open mind, pateince in training and learning to connect mind, body and breath.  Students may overall develop improved balance, flexibility and posture as well as a more centered mind and relaxed spirit in addition to the confidence to defend oneself. #Wellness

Yoga

This is a level one/level two Hatha Yoga - Vinyasa Flow class. In each class there will always be instruction in how to move into poses (asanas) in order to arrive at proper alignment (hatha), as well as continuous movement linking poses (vinyasa). As the school year progresses and participants become more familiar with the poses we'll incorporate more flow linking asanas. The coordination of breath and movement will be emphasized, as well as the non-competitive nature of yoga practice and its relation to meditation. The use of props to assist in proper alignment is encouraged, and poses will progress from basics to more challenging moves, so that beginners as well as those with more yoga experience can participate at an appropriate level for them.  #Wellness

During the winter term class, each student designed and fabricated their own electric guitar from the ground up. Commiunity and Arts Organizers Adalky Capellan '13 and Nikaury Roman '13 will talk about their work in arts and community organizing, and their current work on the DePauw Theatre Production STREET SCENES OF PUTNAM COUNTY AND DEPAUW.

ADALKY CAPELLAN '13As an afro-latina artist raised in Washington Heights, NYC, Adalky Capellan views arts and grassroots collaborations as a medium of creative expression used as tool for social change and power.  She currently works at Community Action for Safe Apartments (CASA) as a community organizer.  She now organizes in rent stabilized buildings in efforts to build a collective to shift the forces of power. 

NIKAURY ROMAN '13Nikaury Roman (named for a character in a Dominican soap opera) was born in New York City to parents with roots in the Dominican Republic, and went on to DePauw University after earning a full tuition, Posse Scholarship.  During that time, she performed in the department's productions, student run shows, wrote and directed plays, and taught theatre to students in Accra, Ghana (Summer Shakespeare GH).

debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, the group has given over 5,800

performances in 49 countries on five continents, exploring the limitless sonic

possibilities of the Japanese drum, the taiko. This production of Dadan, part of

Kodo’s 35th Anniversary celebrations and its first North American tour, will

be the only performance in Indiana. Allow yourself to be immersed in this

mesmerizing 2,000-year old tradition — as old as Japan itself and as much

pure, physical athleticism as it is a form of musical entertainment. Presented
