SUMMARY:Queer Frontiers: Crucibles, Scapegoats, and Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:&nbspIn this post Ellen, post Will-and-Grace, post L Word, post Queer as Folk world, who are we?&nbsp The cultural politics of recent decades suggest that LGBTQ identities and issues are the source of both the promise of gender and sexual justice and also the threat of a nation in decline.&nbsp We are simultaneously crucibles of progress and scapegoats of perversion. We may come out over and over again, but do we really ever come &ldquohome&rdquo?&nbsp When we do, what does that &ldquohome&rdquo look like?&nbsp In these remarks I comment on the continual struggle for queer inclusion and the individual and cultural contradictions this struggle reveals. How are we grappling with the contradictions and where is the friction taking us?&nbspBioJodi O&rsquoBrien is a Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work. Her teaching and research focus on everyday forms of difference and discrimination, and the social psychological and institutional practices that perpetuate prejudice and inequalities. Her books include The Production of Reality Social Prisms and Everyday Inequalities.&nbsp She is also the editor of the Encyclopedia of Gender and Society and currently edits the sociology journal, Contexts.&nbsp Her most recent articles are on the cultural politics of religion and sexuality with an emphasis on queer Christians and the congregations that support them.&nbspIn 2010, Professor O'Brien was hired as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Marquette University. Shortly after the hire took effect, it&nbspwas revoked. The university president cited a lack of fit between O'Brien's scholarship on sexuality and gay marriage and the university's Jesuit Catholic mission as the reason for this action. The decision resulted in widespread outrage and protest and was the subject of intense media focus for several weeks following the event. Many observers believed that the real reason for the decision was intervention by the Milwaukee Archbishop and conservative Catholic activists who opposed the hire because O'Brien is an open lesbian.&nbspFree and open to the public. &nbspAll are welcome!&nbsp&nbsp
