Pick a Struggle: Unpacking Power, Privilege & Oppression- A Queer, Christian Woman of Color Perspective

Add to Calendar4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

All aspects of our identities– whether those aspects are oppressed or privileged by society– interact with one another. Often, people believe that they can’t experience privilege because they also experience oppression. By understanding your own privilege and power and listening to the experiences of people that have oppressed we can start to build solidarity. Join us for a relatable discussion about how to push back against your privilege and to use it in a way that challenges oppressive systems instead of perpetuating them.

Have you checked your privilege lately?

David Alvarez, Claudia Rankine's "Citizen" Reading Group

Add to Calendar7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

In the wake of Ferguson, Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me have been hailed as two profound, indispensable meditations on racism and America. Building upon a campus reading group on Coates’ work and DePauw’s upcoming “Day of Dialogue,” the Prindle Institute for Ethics is sponsoring a reading group on Citizen that will meet at 7:00 PM on April 12, 19, and 26.

Winner of numerous book awards, Citizen marries “prose, poetry, and the visual image” to investigate “the ways in which racism pervades daily American social and cultural life, rendering certain of its citizens politically invisible” (https://www.graywolfpress.org/books/citizen). Our discussions of Rankine’s work will be led by our colleagues Eugene Gloria and Jeannie Vanasco, both of whom have taught Citizen in their classes.

The reading group is open to all members of the DePauw and Greencastle community. If you have any questions about it or would like to join, you can contact the organizer, David Alvarez (davidalvarez@depauw.edu), or the Prindle’s reading group coordinator Christiane Wisehart (christianewisehart@depauw.edu).

Stereotype

Add to Calendar10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Historically, typography has been designed with two axes in mind, x and y.  Today, in contrast, designers are broadening their perceptions about type to accommodate the added dimensions of a digital experiential world.  Recent innovations in type design take principles of animation, interactivity, and kinetic movement and combine them with traditional components of typography, resulting in pioneering explorations in motion typography. This activity made possible, in part, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.  Additional funding provided by the Public Occasions Committee.Exhibt runs February 8-May 12, 2016.  All exhibits are free and open to the public.

The Red Sun in Our Hearts

Add to Calendar10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Drawn exclusively from the DePauw University Permanent Art Collection, The Red Sun in Our Hearts surveys the mid-20th century Socialist Realism art movement from mainland China.  Throughout the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, nearly everything from the visual arts and literature to music and theatrical production was created under the watchful eye of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).  Socialist Realism rejected classical Chinese design elements and Western abstraction in favor of Soviet-inspired aesthetics and function.  The CCP printed millions of political posters for decades, covering a wide range of social, economic, and political themes.  This exhibition features 38 original political posters as well as stamps, film, and objects from the Cultural Revolution.  Februay 1-May 12, 2016  All exhibits are free and open to the public.

Yoga

Add to Calendar12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

This is a level one/level two Hatha Yoga - Vinyasa Flow class. In each class there will always be instruction in how to move into poses (asanas) in order to arrive at proper alignment (hatha), as well as continuous movement linking poses (vinyasa). As the school year progresses and participants become more familiar with the poses we'll incorporate more flow linking asanas. The coordination of breath and movement will be emphasized, as well as the non-competitive nature of yoga practice and its relation to meditation. The use of props to assist in proper alignment is encouraged, and poses will progress from basics to more challenging moves, so that beginners as well as those with more yoga experience can participate at an appropriate level for them.  #Wellness
