Why make a gift?

Where does the money go?
Money raised by the Senior Gift Drive goes to the Annual Fund, which supports things such as scholarships and off-campus study.  DePauw spends its Annual Fund dollars as they come in, so you know your gift will immediately benefit the University.

Why should I support the Senior Gift Drive?
As alumni, you now have the responsibility to make sure DePauw can continue to provide the same quality educational experience you received.  Support of the Annual Fund, through the Senior Gift Drive, helps to make this happen.

But, didn’t I just pay a lot in tuition?
Yes, you may have.  However, even if you paid full tuition and received no scholarship assistance, the amount you paid for tuition covered only half of what it cost DePauw to educate you.  The Annual Fund, along with endowment earnings, helps to make up the difference.

I’m broke.  Can’t I just wait until I can make a meaningful gift?
Your participation in the Senior Gift Drive is meaningful in and of itself!  The percentage of alumni who participate in the Annual Fund each year is an important metric of how successful a university is.  A high participation rate can help DePauw move up in national rankings, which adds value to your degree.

I always hear about how big the endowment is.  It seems like DePauw has plenty of money.
The endowment is separate from the Annual Fund.  The endowment is similar to the University’s savings account.  We spend from the endowment at the current rate of 5.5 percent per year, while investing the rest of the earnings to promote growth over time.  DePauw also receives money from tuition, but that covers only a portion of the cost of educating DePauw’s students.  Tuition, endowment spending and the Annual Fund are equally vital to securing the DePauw experience for generations to come.
