All of the forms within CIS utilize consistent navigation techniques. This Help page will describe the basic navigation scheme and also give navigation tips that will be applicable to the CIS forms.
There are two ways to enter the CIS data entry screens: from the CIS link in the e-Services Main Menu for professional data entry and from links embedded in the Prospective Student Info Screen for management data entry.
- CIS Links. When entering through the CIS links, the forms will have full functionality including the toolbar across the top of every form. In most cases the user will be redirected back to form after the form is saved or updated.
- Prospective Student Info Screen Links. When entering through the Prospective Student Info Screen, only the form will be available. The user should not see the toolbar or have access to the other forms. When the user saves the form, they will be redirected back to the Prospective Student Info Screen.
At the top of the browser window will be a toolbar that is used for navigating to CIS related links. These links are available when most of the CIS forms are open.
e-Home | Person Search | Organization Search | Reports | Help Logout
Person Search. The Person Search link will open the Person Search window. This window is used to search for clients. The Search form is customized based on the user's audience group. For example Admission support staff can view prospective student information while Financial Aid staff can view prospective and current student information. Once the client is selected, the window will close and return to the current form.
Note: See Person Search.
Organization Search. The Organization Search link will open the Organization Search window. This search form is used to find the desired organization. Once the desired organization is selected, the window will open the Organization form.
Note: See Organization Form.At the bottom of the browser window will be a toolbar. Clicking on the most left link will open the DePauw University's copy right statement. Clicking on the email link will allow sending an email to the help desk. The Last Updated is not a link but is informational only.

The CIS toolbar is used for navigation from one form to another. Navigate from form to form by clicking on the appropriate CIS form link. The CIS toolbar will show links that are relative to the current form selected. Additional links may be selected from the drop-down menu in the toolbar.
New | Person | Address | DigiComm | Relationship | Activity | International | AD Info
- New. Use the "New" link to create a new person record. When on a "Prev|Next" form, the "New" link will add a new record to that form.
- Drop-Down Menu. The default selection in the drop-down menu is AD Info. Click on the desired form from the drop-down menu, then click on GO to open the selected form.
- Prev|Next. Some forms will display the Prev|Next links in the toolbar. Selecting "Prev" will select the previous record of the current form while selecting "Next" will select the following record.
When a form is in update mode (client has already been entered), the client's name will be in the information header. Their address and DPU Person ID will also be displayed. Clicking on the client's name will open another window with the client's appropriate Student Information Screen (Current, Prospective, Alumni). This screen can be used to view all of the client's information or can be restricted to view only certain types of information.
The mouse can be used to navigate from form to form or anywhere on a form. Simply move the cursor to the desired link or field and click on the left mouse button.
The Tab key can be used to navigate through the fields of a form. Normally the tab sequence starts at the top and works downward and then to the right of the section of the form.
Note: When tabbing through a form, the tab sequence also includes LOVs (Flashlight) and Eraser symbols.
Suggestion: The Tab key can be used to navigate to an LOV. Once the LOV is selected, the Enter key can be used to launch the LOV. Once the selection is made in the LOV (by clicking the mouse), the associated field will be populated with the selection and the LOV window will close.
There are several ways to navigate through a drop-down list. The Arrow or Letter keys will normally be used when tabbing through a form.
- Using Arrow Keys. The Up and Down Arrow keys can be used to scroll through a list. Once the desired selection is in the field simply tab to proceed to the next field.
- Using Letter Keys. Typing a letter will select the first word with that letter, I.e. typing "M" will show "Miss". Continue to type "M" to scroll through all the words starting with "M", I.e. "Miss", "Mr.", "Mrs." and "Ms.". Continuing to type "M" will scroll through starting with "Miss". Hit the Tab key to proceed to the next field when the desired selection is in the field.
- Using the Mouse. Clicking on the drop-down menu symbol will open the drop-down menu. A single click on the desired selection will populate that selection in the associated field.
When tabbing to a radio button, use the Up or Left arrow key to select "Yes" and use the Down or Right arrow key to select "No". Or click the left mouse button on the desired selection.
Selecting the Flashlight symbol will open the Calendar window. Clicking the << link will scroll back by year while the >> link will scroll forward by year. The < link will scroll back by month while the > will scroll forward by month. Clicking on the correct day of the selected month and year will automatically add that date to the associated field and close the calendar window.
Suggestion: To enter today's date in the date field, type "d" in the field then hit the Tab key.
Selecting the Flashlight symbol will open the associated LOV search window. Type in the desired search criteria, then click on the Find button (or press the Enter key). Click on the desired value from the search results then click on Select. The associated field on the form will be populated with the selection and the LOV window will close.
Suggestion: Use wild card "%" for searching text or numbers that have some commonality. For example "Smit%" would return all names starting with Smit (Smit, Smiter, Smith, Smither, etc.)
The combination entry box combines a drop-down list and an LOV(Search). This is used when normally a small list of values are used but occasionally a different value is required. If the desired selection is not in the drop-down list, use the LOV(Search) to find the desired selection.
Clicking on the Eraser symbol will erase any data in the associated field. When tabbing to an Eraser, hit the Enter key to clear the associated field.
Clicking on the Red X symbol will delete the entire entry for that record.
Clicking on the Pencil will open an e-Services Notepad Text Editor. Type the notes in the Text Editor, then click on the Link and Close link. The Text Editor window will close and the text will be entered into the Notes field.
Clicking on the Camera will open either the Person or Organization form in a new window. Closing out the new window will return to the previous form.
- Add Record. The Add Record button will be displayed at the bottom of a new form when the form is in Insert mode. This button can either be clicked using the left mouse button or by pressing the Enter key. When the button is actuated, the page will refresh while the form is being saved. Once the page is refreshed, the Save Changes button will be displayed instead of Add Record.
- Save Changes. The Save Changes button will be displayed at the bottom of an existing form when the form is in Update mode. This button can either be clicked using the left mouse button or by pressing the Enter key. When the button is actuated, the page will refresh while the modified form is being saved. Multi-row forms will only have a Save Changes button.
- Don't Save. Clicking on Don't Save will close the form without saving the information. The form will close and the previously opened form will be refreshed.
Note: Any new information entered in the form's field will be lost if the Don't Save button is clicked.
