Cool weather and changing leaves means that fall has arrived on campus, and with it, Fall Break.
This year found 19 Management Fellows spending the first two days of their break in New York City , to meet with alumni and hear about various career options and internship possibilities.
While in New York, the group was able to meet with seven employees of Deutsche Bank where they learned about both the investment banking and research side of the industry. The students also had an opportunity to tour the trading floor and observe what goes on behind the scenes of a major Investment Bank. Andrew LaCasse ‘08 said he “especially liked seeing the trading floor where we could see the nitty gritty and hidden details that make up the investment banking industry.”
We also met with two special agents of the FBI and the founder of CyanLine, LLC. These three speakers provided unique insight on the benefits of a liberal arts degree and the unusual paths you can take with it.
The highlight of the day was a luncheon attended by twelve alumni from the following companies:
Over lunch, students were able to talk in small groups with the various alumni, allowing more personal contact and networking. The alumni also presented a brief overview of what they do and how a DePauw education has benefited them in their careers..
After lunch, students were able to meet with alumni in even smaller groups as three groups went their separate ways to visit and meet with a specific company. The Center for Creative Resources, Merrill Lynch, and Net Theory, Inc. all met with groups of Management Fellows to go in-depth about what they do. The small groups allowed students to connect more personally with the alumni.
Tuesday started with a presentation at the Ernst & Young Headquarters in Times Square. Management Fellows talked with alumni about careers in consulting and finance and how best to get yourself noticed by recruiters in large companies.
The students then met with a young DePauw alumnus who is currently a staff producer for MTV2, as well as an alumna who is an account supervisor with the advertising agency, BBDO New York. These presentations gave the students a chance to learn about careers in non-finance industries.
The McDermond Center would like to thank the following people and companies for meeting with the Management Fellows:
A special thank you needs to be said to Nancy Geiss ’68 and Jamie Lewis ’98 who were instrumental in helping plan and organize our trip.
Hilary Blake ’08 summed up the trip best when she said,
“I am so glad I was given this unique opportunity to learn from and network with so many alumni and execs from top companies in the nation. Visiting New York was an amazing and unforgettable experience.”
