ELLSWORTH SUPPORTS SMALL BUSINESS TAX RELIEF
WASHINGTON – Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Evansville) today voted to provide tax relief for small business owners. The House passed the Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2007, 360-45.
“Small businesses form the backbone of the American economy. They create hundreds of millions new jobs each year. And, they drive the innovation that makes America great,” said Ellsworth. “This vote provides them with long overdue tax relief.”
The bill expands the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), which provides tax credits to employers who hire veterans or disadvantaged workers. It includes employers of disabled veterans and increases the age range of disadvantaged workers who qualify for employers’ tax purposes.
“We must make every effort to ensure that small businesses prosper in a pro-growth economy,” said Ellsworth. “The bill enjoys wide bipartisan support for a reason: it’s the right thing to do for America’s small businesses and workers.”
Passage of the small business tax relief bill is expected to break a logjam in the U.S. Senate over a bill to raise the minimum wage. The bill has been stalled as Senators and Representatives worked to reach agreement on attaching small business tax relief to the increase. The House approved an increase to the minimum wage on January 10, 2007, 315 to 116.
“As Congress works towards increasing the minimum wage for American workers, legislation like this is necessary to help small businesses across the country stay competitive,” said Ellsworth. “Let’s come together and show that the path toward fiscal responsibility can be both pro-business and pro-worker.”
Ellsworth is a member of the Subcommittee on Finance and Tax of the Small Business Committee, which is charged with authorizing Small Business Administration lending and investment programs, monitoring issues regarding entrepreneurs’ access to capital and finance, and oversight of tax policy and pension matters affecting small businesses.
