Nick Dimos - The White House

Nick Dimos at the White House

I spent spring semester 2004 in the White House Lower Press Office under Press Secretary Scott McClellan.  These few months were by far the most rewarding and eye-opening time of my life.  I learned so much about Washington and the White House that no book or magazine article has ever mentioned.  I feel so grateful to know these things now rather than in fifteen years.

Basically, my position was threefold.  First, my primary responsibility was to the press corps.  Meeting the White House correspondents from all the different news agencies was truly invaluable, and I learned just as much from them as from the White House staff.  Second, I researched material for the Press Secretaries to use in their briefings.  Third, I helped organize press conferences and press pool movements for the national and even international press.

During my time in the West Wing, I was able to meet all of the President’s Senior Advisors and almost all of the Cabinet Secretaries, Prime Minister Blair, and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.  Years from now when I reflect on my life I will see these months as some of the happiest and most inspiring of my life.
