In the spring of her junior year, Kate Dobbins traveled to Washington, DC for a semester-long internship as a Press and Legislative Intern to Congressman Brad Ellsworth (D-IN). While performing legislative research, answering constituent phone calls, and assisting in composing press releases, advisories, constituent responses and newsletters, she was promoted to a paid position on Ellsworth’s staff. As his Executive Assistant/Scheduler, she coordinated the Congressman’s constituent meetings and campaign events, as well as managing his daily schedule. Dobbins, from Louisville, KY, said that the internship was “unbelievable,” and her favorite aspect of the Media Fellows Program. She wants to return to Washington after graduation. Interested in pursuing government media relations, Dobbins is a political science major with a minor in rhetoric communication and is applying to public policy and public affairs graduate programs as well as related jobs, keeping her post-graduation options open.
In addition to her Media Fellows internship, Dobbins was a public relations and marketing intern at YUM! Headquarters, KFC Division in Louisville during January 2007 and an intern with N2 Production Co. in Louisville in the spring of 2005. Throughout her four years at DePauw, Dobbins has worked with WGRE, the campus radio station; played field hockey, an NCAA sport; volunteered with government funded daycare, Head Start; and been involved with her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta.
