Kate Billman,
Class of 2006
I have had a great interest in a career in the media for as long as I can remember. The more I learn about this area through the Media Fellows program, the more motivated I am to experience even more. As a DePauw student in the Media Fellows program I can explore all facets of the media. Participating in student television programming, listening to special speakers, and being an active member in the classroom is allowing me to cultivate my talents and gain the knowledge I will need to be successful in media. Internship opportunities in the future will also help me to reach my goals. The Media Fellows program and DePauw are making my childhood dreams of being a television producer possible. I do not think I would have the same potential for success at any other school.

I decided to come to DePauw because it seemed like a perfect fit for me! I loved the small size, and I have grown to like it even more. It's small enough to run into people going to class, but not too small that I don't meet new people every day. I also loved the idea of the DePauw network and I have already seen it in action. DePauw has so many excellent alumni who are willing to help you find internships and jobs after college. DePauw is a great school and it just feels like home!

My entire decision about attending DePauw was largely contingent on getting in to the Media Fellows Program. Not only does this program incorporate new and intriguing concepts about the media and its impact on society, it also allows us, as students, to discover how we can impact the media and the world around us. Particularly over the past few months, I have felt as if I had some type of deeper understanding of the media's role in the country's reaction to the terrorist attacks. Hearing from practicing journalists from the nation's hot spots, in addition to the classroom discussion, has left me with a new respect for the power of the media.

When I began my college search, I knew that I wanted to be a writer. Even though there are a lot of excellent schools in journalism, DePauw's Media Fellows Program allows me to gain more than just a journalism degree. The program ranks so highly in my mind because I will not only have the knowledge I gain through my major, but also a greater understanding of the media industry itself. By combining the skills and knowledge I gain with my political science or economics degree with the skills and experience I gain through the Media Fellows Program, I hope to one day be an awesome journalist. I truly believe that DePauw and the Media Fellows Program can help fulfill this dream.

When I received the application for Media Fellows
in the mail, I read it and immediately said, "This is for me!" I couldn't have been more correct. I have learned so much, not only about media, but also about myself and my own interests. I cannot picture myself at another university. I had opportunities at DePauw that suited my interests better than any other university I considered.

My twenty year life plan is to be on "The Real World", transition into an MTV VJ and then become Diane Sawyer all while having a family, a few houses and a touch of fame. This being said, I knew a strong communications major and program was high on my list of college requirements. I visited 48, yes really 48 schools, big and small, public and private, and it came down to DePauw. To be honest, when I came to visit I had absolutely no intention of attending DePauw, but the Media Fellows program changed my mind. I looked closely at Northwestern and other schools recognized for their media programs, but the more I researched I found that the best choice for me was the Media Fellows Program at DePauw. The specificity of Media Fellows along with DePauw's size allows students to become involved with as much as they care to, immediately. I have hosted my own radio show, written newspaper articles and appeared on campus television - - opportunities that the other schools I looked at just could not offer a first-year student. And I still have a lot more to look forward to; internships, off-campus travel, mentor relationships and great speakers. I would recommend the program to anyone, and believe me, I've done my research!

For me, the flexibility of the Media Fellows Program at DePauw made it more alluring than journalism programs at other schools. I wanted to know that I could experience the media without being locked into a journalism major or specific school. I also felt I would receive a more personal experience as a Media Fellow at DePauw than as a journalism student at another school. The faculty involved in the program appeared to have a good relationship with each of the students, and they seemed dedicated to finding the best internship opportunities to fit each Media Fellow.
