Elizabeth Korb in Oxford, EnglandOxford, England - Elizabeth Korb '09 spent the fall of 2007 studying at Oxford. Unlike DePauw, Oxford is run on the tutorial system. This meant that each week Elizabeth would be given a broad essay topic, a laundry list of books and a large amount of time to research and write a 10-12 paper.  While she was at Oxford, she took two tutorials - Sociology of Family and Italian Renaissance Art (her favorite!).

While the Oxford name is often synonymous with "study study study," the semester has also been a semester of exploration. Elizabeth started a candy bar club with her roommate where they analyze a candy bar not available in the states. They also frequently have wine and cheese nights -- as there are great open air markets to buy the most wonderful cheeses and olives!

Elizabeth thinks that: "There is something to be gained from attending a University outside of the infamous DePauw bubble.  Studying here certainly has made me appreciate what DePauw offers its students, but more importantly I now understand there is more than one way to learn and grow as a student."

Brandon Piper 09WASHINGTON, DC - The Institute for Responsible Citizenship selected DePauw’s Brandon Piper '09 as one of twenty-four young men to participate in its summer 2007 leadership program in Washington, DC.  He was chosen from hundreds of applicants from universities all over the country to be part of the fifth class of the Institute.

Brandon Piper, a Communications major, is a Media Fellow at DePauw University.  He is the recipient of the Presidential Rector Scholarship, which is awarded to the top students in each entering class.  Fluent in Italian, Brandon devotes his time as a tutor and mentor to first year students.  He also recently placed second at the National Association of Teachers Singing state competition.  Brandon plans to become a broadcast journalist.

The Institute for Responsible Citizenship admits twenty-four exceptional minority male students each year for its two-summer program at Georgetown University.  During the first summer, students take courses on campus while interning in the DC Metro area.  A generous stipend is provided to cover the cost of transportation and food .  During the second summer, students work full-time and act as mentors to the twenty-four newly admitted young men.  Students live on campus in university housing provided by the Institute during the program.  When not at work or in class, students are treated to intimate meetings with high-level government officials, which in past years have included Supreme Court Justices, the Secretary of State, U.S. Senators, U.S. Congressmen, and business leaders.
