Faculty Quick Guide

How do I access Blackboard?

Open an internet browser (Internet Explorer is the recommended browser) and browse to http://blackboard.depauw.edu. At this point you will need to request a password by clicking on the Forgot password? link and following the on-screen instructions. The first name and last name text boxes are case sensitive and require you to capitalize the first initial of each. You should use all lowercase letters for the user name text box.

What if my students cannot see my course?

You need to make your course available to your students.

  • Click Control Panel.
  • In the section titled Course Options, click Settings.
  • Click Course Availability.
  • Select Yes.
  • Click Submit.

How is my enrollment adjusted during the Add/Drop Adjustment Period?

Students enrolling in your course will be added automatically within 24 hours. You will need to remove students who are no longer taking your course. It is recommended that you wait at least two days following the end of the Adjustment Period to remove students as this is when the last enrollment for Blackboard is processed:

  • Click Control Panel.
  • In the section titled User Management, click Remove Users from the Course.
  • Click Search.
  • Select the student(s) you want to remove.
  • Type “Yes” in the box provided.
  • Click Submit.
  • Click OK in the question dialog box that appears.
  • Click OK.

My course is not listed in my “Courses you are teaching:” list. Why?

You are not enrolled as the instructor for the course. You should contact the Help Desk (x4294 or helpdesk@depauw.edu) with the course number and your username.

How do I get eReserves uploaded to my course?

You should stop by the circulation (lending) desk in the Roy O. West Library to complete the necessary paperwork for having eReserves added to your course. Once this paperwork is turned in the process for uploading the documents to your courses Library Resources content button will begin. Questions concerning this process should be addressed to Connie Cree (x4431 or ccree@depauw.edu).

How do I make a PDF file?

You will need to install a PDF writing software on your computer by browsing to the Help Desk downloads page OR you can visit the Faculty Instructional Technology Support (FITS) Center located in the lower level of the Roy O. West Library to use one of the lab computers.

How do I get someone who is auditing my course access to Blackboard?

An email account and a Blackboard account must be setup for them. You should contact the Help Desk (x4294 or helpdesk@depauw.edu) to make this request.

Why can't my students get to the eReserve documents for my course?

Make sure your course is available to the students (see tip at the top of the page).

Blackboard is slow to respond or it seems to be hung.

Try these steps to fix it in the following order:

1. If you are trying to view a PDF file, refer to the section "WHY ISN'T MY E-RESERVES FILE LOADING? on the "Blackboard - Helpful Tips for Students" sheet.
2. Close and restart the web browser, then try to access Blackboard again.
3. If Blackboard still doesn't work after trying these steps, contact the Network Support Hotline at x6666 to report the problem and request that someone is paged to fix the problem as quickly as possible. (Directions to page someone are included in the x6666 voicemail greeting.
)

If you have other questions about Blackboard, contact the Help Desk (x4294 or helpdesk@depauw.edu) or Blackboard Support (blackboard@depauw.edu).
