Guidelines
Ruler guides are imaginary lines that help position text, objects, and graphics more consistently and precisely in PageMaker documents. You can display, lock, place, move, and remove ruler guides depending on your purposes and preferences. The guidelines are there simply to make your document look more neat and organized – they will not show up on the printed document. In order to use guidelines, the horizontal and vertical rulers must be displayed. To display the rulers, choose View → Show Rulers from the menu bar.
Displaying/hiding guides
Displaying the ruler guides help you position elements on your page. If you want to view only the items that will print, hide the guides. To display guides, choose View → Show Guides from the menu bar. To hide them, choose View → Hide Guides from the menu bar.
Locking/unlocking guides
To avoid accidentally moving your guides, you make lock them in place. To do this, choose View → Lock Guides from the menu bar. A check mark will appear next to this option, indicating that the guides are now locked. To unlock them, choose View → Lock Guides again. The check mark will disappear.
Placing guides
You may add new ruler guides as you need them in your document. To add a vertical guide, click and hold anywhere in the vertical ruler area. To add a horizontal guide, click and hold anywhere in the horizontal ruler area. Drag and drop the guide in the desired position on your page. A colored line appears. This is your guide and it will not show on the printed document.
Moving existing guides
To move a guide that already exists, the guides must be unlocked (click View on the menu bar and make sure there is no check mark by the Lock guides option.). Choose the pointer arrow from the toolbox. Click and hold the guide. The pointer will appear as a double-headed arrow. Drag the guide to its new location and release.
Removing ruler guides
You may remove individual guides or you can remove all guides at once. To remove individual guides, select the pointer arrow from the tool box and click on the guide you wish to remove. Drag the guide into the ruler area and release. To remove all guides from your document, choose View → Clear Ruler Guides from the menu bar.
Using snap to
PageMaker offers two options for forcing alignment. You can choose either snap to rulers or snap to guides. In both cases, it is easier to align multiple objects to the same line. To use snap to rulers, choose View → Snap to Rulers from the menu bar. Now as you move objects in your document, you will notice that they are pulled to the nearest ruler increment. To use snap to guides, choose View → Snap to Guides from the menu bar. Objects will now be pulled to a guide when near it.
