Styles
In Adobe PageMaker, styles are used to define the type, indents, tabs, and hyphenation settings for specific paragraphs in your document.
Creating a style
In Adobe PageMaker, you can make a new style based on an already existing style or you can make a new style from scratch. You can also choose a style for the paragraph to follow.
To create a new style, choose Type → Define Styles… from the menu bar. The Define Styles box will appear. Click New… The Style Options box will appear. Choose a name for your new style and type it in the name box. To base it on an already existing style, from the Based on pull-down list, choose the desired existing style. To select a style for the paragraph to follow, choose the desired style from the Next style pull-down list.
Define or change the style by clicking on the following buttons:
Char… --This button is used to define character specifications including font, type size, color, and type style.
Para… --This button is used to define paragraph specifications including indents, alignment, paragraph spacing, and language.
Tabs… --This button is used to define the tab settings.
Hyph… --This button is used for controlling hyphenation.
Applying a style
To apply a style, highlight the paragraph you want to apply it to. You then have two options. You can choose Type → Style and then the name of the style you wish to apply, or you can choose the name of the style you wish to apply from the style palette (if the style palette is not displayed, choose Window → Show Styles from the menu bar).
Editing a style
To edit a style, choose Type → Define Styles… from the menu bar. The Define Styles box will appear. From the style pull-down list, choose the style you wish to edit. Click Edit… The Style Options box will appear. Using the Char…, Para…, Tabs…, and Hyph… buttons, make the appropriate changes to the style. Click OK to close the Style Options box and click OK again to close the Define Styles box and return to your work. Remember that making changes to a style that you have already used in your project will change every instance of that style in your document.
