Selection Tools
There are three section tools; hold down the Lasso tool to access the other two.
The “Lasso Tool” selection tool is a freehand selection tool

The “Polygon Lasso Tool” allows you to select any shape polygon. Simply click on your starting point and move to the next point. Continue to do this until you come back to the starting point and once you click on the initial point, the selection will be complete. Note: if you double click at any time during the selection process, Photoshop will automatically assume that you are done and will make a selection with the last point connected to the starting point in a straight line. Also if you make a mistake on any one of your points, pressing the “Backspace” button will undo the last point.

The “Magnetic Lasso Tool” is used to simplify the selection of objects. Based upon contrast, the magnetic lasso tool automatically selects objects as you move the mouse around its edges. Like the other Lasso tools, once you get back to the initial starting point, the selection will be complete. Also, double click will result in Photoshop automatically finishing the selection (by going straight from the last point to the first point). You can always click to make a point if Photoshop does not place one where it is needed. If you do not like a point, you can redo it by using “Backspace” to undo it.

After an area has been selected, it becomes the only part of the picture that will be edited until it is deselected. Also selected areas can be copied, cut and pasted back into the same picture or into other pictures.
Layers
Whenever you paste an image in your picture or import a picture it becomes a layer. Layers can be “stacked” in whatever order you would like to stack them. Each Layer is displayed in the “Layers” window on the right side of the screen. Ordering Layers can be done by simply dragging the layer in the pane into the position that you desire it to be. Whatever layer is “above” another layer in the pane will result is the layers image being displayed above the lower layers.

By dragging Layer 1 to the top of the window, layer 2 under that and so on, we can change how these five layers are stacked.

Also, you can rename the layers in order to make it easier to manage them by simply double clicking them in the window, typing the name and pressing “enter”.

Transparent Layers
You can edit the properties of any Layer by exploring all the options under the “Layer” selection in the toolbar. However, one of the easy and useful effects is layer transparency.
Changing the transparency of a layer can be done by adjusting the “Opacity” percentage in the top right corner of the Layers window. Layers can also be assigned styles by clicking the “Layers Style” button at the bottom of the Layers window pane.
