Macromedia Captivate

Quick Start Guide

Macromedia Captivate is a wonderful program which is used to create a movie for tutorial purposes or for a more interactive experience on a website.

Making a New Movie

Click on File > Record or create a new movie

A new screen will pop up as seen below:

Select the type of movie you want to create.  For this guide click the application movie option.  Application is the most common because it records any window or program that you specify.  The other two options are basically different screen sizes.

After selecting application you will see a new layout which will look something like the image below.

At this point, the red box is the recording area.  Anything that is on the screen within the red box is recorded.

Changing the recording area

To change the application or the recording area click on the drop down which says “select the window you’d like to record.”  Click on the program or window that you wish to record.

Finishing the movie

After selecting the appropriate window, click on the record button and start making your movie.  Anything that you click on or any screen you change to will show up on the movie.

To stop recording your movie click on the Macromedia Captivate icon on the bottom menu bar.  It will then ask you to end your movie.

After the recording has stopped click File > Publish and click ok.  That’s it!  You have now created your first movie file.
