Cyber Security Guide

One of the problems with computers today is the fact that there are so many dangers that may cause damage to your computer or even result in identity theft.  To make sure that you have the most enjoyable experience on the internet this guide will give you a few tips that will help make sure that you and your computer are safe.

Tip 1: Always have an antivirus program

If you are a student or faculty at DePauw University then you do not have to worry about obtaining an antivirus program, but you do need to remember to make sure your virus definitions are up to date and it is also a good idea to scan your computer once every month.

To check for updates or scan your computer simply click on the yellow shield image, which is found on the right hand corner of your screen. A window for Symantec will pop up.

To update virus definitions simply click on the LiveUpdate button and the software will take care of the rest.  To Scan the computer simply click on scan computer, check mark My computer and then click scan.

If for some reason you do not have Symantec there is a great free antivirus program called AVG.

Tip 2: Scan your computer for Spyware

Spyware are essentially mini programs that are loaded onto your computer when you visit websites.  Ultimately, spyware allows other people to see your computer and may lead to identity theft.  If identity theft is not a good enough reason to download an anti spyware program then it is important to understand that spyware also slows down your computer considerably.

One of the best spyware programs to date is Ad-Aware SE.  It is a really simple program that you need to run at least once a month in order to protect your identity.

To use the program simply hit the scan now button and the program will do all the rest.

Tip 3: Passwords

Taking the time to protect your passwords is one of the most underrated cyber security tips.  When making a password the best practice is to have at least seven digits that contain at least one letter and one number.  The most obscure you can make the password, the better the chance you have of fraud.

It is also a good idea to have many different passwords.  Sure, it is easier to just have one password for everything, but people that steal passwords already know that most Americans use the same password for everything.  This can open a whole plethora or problems and it can be resolved by having a different password for everything.
