Convert .mov Files to .avi Files
When you create a movie in iMovie and export it to QuickTime format for the web, the program creates a .mov file that can be played using the QuickTime player. If you would like to create a file that can be played using Windows Media Player instead, you must convert your .mov file to an .avi file in a program called Cleaner 6.
1. Open Cleaner 6.
- Run your mouse over the row of icons at the bottom of the desktop, without holding down the mouse button. The name of each program appears as you run your mouse over it. When you get to Cleaner, click on it.
2. Create a new batch (file) and save it.
- Go to the File menu, choose New Batch.

- A window will appear asking you to name the new file that you are about to create. The name for this file can be the same nameyou used for your iMovie project. Enter a name next to Save As: dialog box.

- Browse to find a location to save the project. In the “Where:” box, browse to the location in which you want to save your new project. To do this, click on the double arrow at the right of the “Where:” box, scroll to Desktop, and click on it. In the left column below the “Where” box, Save here will now be an option. Click on that and then click Save. Your movie will then be saved in the “Save here” folder on the desktop.
Note: Do not save anywhere else unless you have spoken with a FITS staff member.
3. Open your existing iMovie project.
- Go to the File menu, Open.
- Click on the double arrow at the right of the From: box and a list of choices should appear as a drop down menu. Scroll to Desktop, and click on it. Click on Save here in the left column below the From: box, find your iMovie file on the right side, and click
on it.

4. Specify that you would like to save to AVI format.
- Another window will now be open with the first frame of your movie displayed in it. You may close this window or move it out of the way by clicking and dragging it to another location on the
screen.

- In the original Cleaner screen, your iMovie Project will be listed. Click the box that is grayed out directly below Settings (see right.)
- If a Settings Wizard appears, click Advanced Settings.
- Select Output and then click on the drop down Arrows to the right to the Format: box. Select AVI from the list.
Your movie has now been converted and you will return to the main Cleaner screen. Press Play in the bottom right hand corner of the screen to play your movie in .avi format.
