iPhoto
iPhoto is a program that helps you organize your digital photos. This manual contains the basics to get you started.  If you need more help, visit http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto for additional tutorials.

Events

  1. iPhoto automatically creates a new “event” every time you upload photos.
  2. To change the thumbnail image of an event, roll over it.  As you move your mouse, the image automatically scrolls through the pictures in that event.  When you see the picture you want as the new thumbnail, hit the spacebar.

 

Editing Events

  1. To merge two events, simply take the one event and drag it over the one you want to add it too.
  2. To separate one event into two, double click to get into the event.  Select where you want the new event to start and click on the “split” button in the bottom left-hand corner of the active bar.
  3. To change the order in which the pictures appear in the album, simply click on the photo you would like to move, and drag it to its new position.

Albums

  1. Albums are what most people thing of when they want to organize their photos.  But because iPhoto is automatically sorted by Events, or photo uploads, albums must be manually created. 
  2. Click the add button, the small plus sign in the bottom left-hand corner of the window. 
  3. Making sure the album icon is selected, type in a name for your new album.
  4. Your new album folder should now appear on the left-hand side of the screen.  To add photos, simply click and drag them into the new file.  You can add whole events, groups of photos within an event, or any individual picture.
  5. Once the photos are in the album, you can rearrange the order they appear in simply by clicking on the photo you would like to move, and dragging it to its new position.

 

Smart Albums

  1.  “Smart Album” is a feature of iPhoto that selects album images for you. 
  2. Click the add button, only this time select “smart album” when you name the new folder.
  3. A Smart Album searches all your events for all the photos that match the criteria you ask for. You can search for pictures with specific description keywords or even create an album of your favorite pictures by searching for only photos with a five star ranking.

 

Slideshow

  1. To create a slideshow, first click the add button in the bottom left-hand corner of the window.
  2. Select the slideshow icon, and give the new folder a name. 
  3. Click and drag the photos you want into the slideshow folder.
  4. Enter your slideshow by doubling clicking on it.
  5. The toolbar at the bottom of the panel can be used to change the slideshow’s settings.
  6. Adjust the duration each image is visible
  7. You can add music from another source by clicking the add music button.
  8. Individual photos can also be edited.  Select a photo and click the adjust button to edit settings for that particular photo.
  9. When you are satisfied, click the preview button to view what you have created so far.

 

Photo Editing

Red Eye

  1. Select the photo and click the edit (pencil) button on the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select the red eye correction tool.  You can adjust the size of the circle, but all you have to do is position your cursor over the red spot and click. 
  3. Zooming in on the problem area helps.

 

Color Imperfections

  1. Select the photo and click the edit (pencil) button on the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select the retouch tool. 
  3. Move your cursor over the blemish and click to mask over the inconsistencies.  If you need to correct a larger or smaller area, adjust the size of the correction circle by moving the slider.

Adjusting Brightness

  1. iPhoto can automatically adjust your photo’s appearance when you click “Enhance.”
  2. Selecting “Adjust” gives you specific control to improve the brightness and contrasts in your picture.

 

Cropping or Straightening

  1. Select the photo and click the edit (pencil) button on the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select the cropping tool.
  3. iPhoto allows you to adjust the size of the cropping area and provided a convenient grid to help you align the new photo professionally.
  4. The straightening tool also provides a grid to help you realign the horizon and straighten a picture.
