Player Area Overview

Windows Media Player:

Features Taskbar

The features taskbar contains key Player buttons and an area with buttons that link to online stores.

 Now Playingclick this button to view a video, visualization, or information about the content that is playing.  To quickly select a CD, DVD, album, artist, etc. to play, click the Quick Access Panel button. 

Library – The Windows Media Player library allows you to organize media files on your computer or create playlists.

Rip – Allows you to play a CD or rip specific tracks from your CD to the library so the content from the CD is now stored on your computer.

Burn – Allows you to burn your own CDs from tracks on your computer.

Sync – Synchronize your files to portable devices such as portable digital audio players, pocket PC’s, etc.

Guide – Find digital media on the internet. 

Music – Get access to music on the internet via online stores.

Radio – Get access to radio stations on the internet by visiting an online radio station provider.

Video – Get access to video on the internet via online stores.  To change the online stores that are displayed, or to browse other stores, click the Choose Online Store button. 

 

“Now Playing” Area

The Now Playing area contains a number of panes you can use to view videos, media information, audio and video controls, and the current playlist.  It is possible to show or hide these different panes as needed.

 Video and Visualization Pane – this pane is automatically displayed when you play a video or DVD.  When playing an audio file, you may choose which visualization you view by choosing ViewVisualizations from the menu bar (if the menu bar is not in view, hit Ctrl-M on the keyboard) and then choosing the visualization you would like to see. 

Enhancements Pane – If the Enhancement pane is not visible, choose View → Enhancements → Show Enhancements from the menu bar.  The Enhancement pane contains several controls that you can use to adjust video settings, audio effects, play speed, and the color of Windows Media Player.  To view all the different controls, click the blue arrows in the upper left hand corner of the Enhancement Pane. 

Playlist Pane – this pane displays the items on the current playlist.  For CDs, it displays the track names and lengths and for DVDS it displays the DVD title and chapter names.

Media Information Pane – this pane displays other information about the content you are playing including album art and album title, if available. 

  Player Controls

Use these controls to adjust volume and control basic playback tasks like playing, pausing, stopping, fast forwarding and rewinding your media files.

 Seek Slider – Play the selected item at a specific point.  You may move the slider to a specific point where you want to begin playback. 

Rewind – Rewind the selected item, if applicable.

Fast Forward – Fast forward the selected item, if applicable.

Play – Play the selected item.  When an item is playing, the play button becomes the pause button. 

PausePause the selected item.  When an item is paused, the pause button becomes the play button.  To resume play, click the play button. 

Stop – Stop playing the selected item.

Previous – Play the previous item, if applicable.

Next – Play the next item, if applicable.

Mute – Turn the sound on or off.

Volume Slider – Use this control to change the volume level.

Shuffle/Repeat – Turn on or off shuffle and/or repeat.  When shuffle is turned on, items in the playlist are played in a random order.  When repeat is turned on, the playlist is played repeatedly. 

  Mini Player Toolbar

When you minimize Windows Media Player, a mini player toolbar appears in the taskbar.

The controls for the mini player are the same as for the large player.

 

RealPlayer:

Presentation Area

The presentation area is made up of the Video Display area and the Related Info area.  The Related Info area only appears when information is available. 

 

 

 

Video Screen – This pane is automatically displayed when you play a DVD.  When playing an audio file, you may choose to view a visualization in this window.  To view a visualization, from the menu bar choose View → Choose Visualization and then click on the name of the visualization you wish to view. 

Menu bar - The menu bar lists most of the RealPlayer functions. 

Message Center - Click on the Message Center button to open the message center.

 

Status Display Bar

The status display bar shows information about the current clip.

Now Playing button – Click this button to open or close the now playing list on the left side of your window.  The now playing list shows what clips are in line to play and those most recently played.  It can also be used to create playlists by dragging and dropping files, links, or clips to the list.

Status display – Information, including clip name, media type, time played, clip length, and even internet connection speed, is shown here.  Album info, when available, will appear to the right of the status display. 

Media Browser Quick Access Menu – Click the globe to show or hide the media browser.  Use the pull-down arrow to go to a specific page in the media browser.

Resize Handle – The resize handle can be clicked and dragged to resize the amount of space used for the Presentation area and the Media Browser. 

 

Navigation Bar

The Navigation Bar provides page specific Media Browser controls.  These include the ability to go forward and back to viewed pages, refresh a view, etc.  The bar will change as you select different pages from the tabs. 

Browser Display

 The Browser Display area shows the content of the selected page.
