How to scan a slide and edit with Photoshop:
Slides:
- Try to remove dust from the slide in the beginning with a slide brush or blow the dust off of the slide
- Do not touch the image part of the slide because the fingerprints alter the scanned image
- The slides should be inserted into the scanner with the top side facing up and the wide parts of the slide going vertically
How the slide goes into the scanner:
- Top of slide (goes into scanner first)

- Bottom of slide
Scanning:
- You can scan in Photoshop and go to FILE->IMPORT->Nikon Scan 4.0, or you can open Nikon Scan 4.0 and edit the slides later in Photoshop or another program.
- Once the program is opened, click the Preview button. The image will appear. Click and drag to make a marquee box (a box with a dotted line border) to crop the preview image to the desired area to be scanned. Only the parts of the slide contained within the marquee box will be scanned.
- After the image has appeared, it is important to change the resolution. This can be done by clicking the Crop drop-down button in the Tool Palette 1. Towards the bottom there is a place to enter the custom resolution. It will probably be set around 4,000 pixels/inch. This is much too large. An appropriate resolution is between 300 and 600 pixels/inch.
- Once the resolution has been changed and the appropriate image selected using the marquee box, click Scan. The image will go to Photoshop if you are importing, or it will stay in the Nikon Scan 4.0 program if you are planning on editing the image later.
Saving:
- Be sure when saving that the file type is what you need. In the Save As dialog box the file type is displayed at the bottom and may be changed. Images for web use are JPEGs and LUNA database images are TIFFs. A file edited in Photoshop will default to a .psd file (a Photoshop file that can be opened in other programs) and a file edited in Macromedia Fireworks will be a .png file.
Editing:
- Be sure to close out of the Nikon Scan 4.0 dialog box before trying to work in another application because you cannot work with the scanned file in another program until the box is closed.
- If editing in Photoshop the basic editing functions are:
- To zoom in = VIEW -> Zoom In
- The key command is CTRL + +
- To zoom out = VIEW -> Zoom Out
- The key command is CTRL + -
- Rotating a canvas = IMAGE -> Rotate Canvas -> select desired rotation
- Change the color balance = IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS -> Color Balance
- The program will also do Auto Balance in the ADJUSTMENTS menu or the key command is CTRL + SHIFT + B
- Change the levels = IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS -> Levels
- The program will also do Auto Levels in the ADJUSTMENTS menu or the key command is CTRL + SHIFT + L
- Use clone stamp = In the tool menu in the workspace select the clone stamp function. Right click to edit the stamp size (how many pixels are contained within the stamping area). Hold down the ALT key to select the area from which you want to take the color. Click over the area to be stamped.
