Working with Passwords

How to require a password for opening/modifying a file
When choosing a password, combine upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols in a random order. An example of a strong password is 7Ut5!ihN. An example of a weak password is John789. Make sure you are able to remember your password, so you don’t have to write it down.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Security. Then do one of the following:

ShowCreate a password to open

    • In the Password to open box, type a password, and then click OK.
    • In the Reenter password to open box, type the password again, and then click OK.

ShowCreate a password to modify

    • In the Password to modify box, type a password, and then click OK.
    • In the Reenter password to modify box, type the password again, and then click OK.

How to remove or change a password
Open the document whose password you want to remove or change. Enter the password when prompted.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and click the Security tab. In the Password to open box or the Password to modify box, select the placeholder symbols (usually asterisks) that represent the existing password.

Do one of the following:

·                                         To remove the password, press DELETE, and then click OK.

·                                         To change the password, type the new password, and then click OK.

If you changed the password, reenter the new password, and then click OK.
