Daylight Saving Time Zone Change Instructions

Passed by the Indiana State Legislature last April, the State of Indiana will start observing Daylight Saving Time along with 47 other states in the US starting this spring. Putnam County and Greencastle will stay in the Eastern Time Zone and will change to Daylight Saving Time.

This year, Daylight Saving Time began at 2 a.m. on Sunday, April 2, when clocks were advanced one hour to 3 a.m., and ends at 2 a.m. on October 29, when clocks will be turned back one hour.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO - CHECK YOUR COMPUTER’S TIME ZONE NOW:

You should verify the time zone on your computer or laptop to Eastern Time. Once set on Eastern Time, the computer will then automatically adjust its clock for Daylight Saving Time each spring and fall.

  2. Click on the “Options” icon found at the top of the screen to the left of the “Exit” icon.
  3. Click on the “Time Zone” tab.
  4. Select “(GMT -05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada )” from the drop down menu.
  5. Click “Save.”

This will update the time zone for Tigermail only. If you use the GroupWise desktop client, please also see the instructions for updating your calendar using GroupWise.

----------------------------------------

The GroupWise email server was updated for time zone changes on March 31st. Any GroupWise appointments which did not automatically adjust their time for DST on April 2nd should be deleted and rescheduled. Most appointments should have updated automatically. Appointments which were posted AFTER adjusting your computer’s time zone setting and BEFORE the server was updated on March 31st should be checked for accuracy. To delete an appointment in GroupWise:

  • Open your GroupWise calendar.
  • Select the appointment to be deleted by clicking on it with your left mouse button.
  • Press <DELETE> on your keyboard.
  • If prompted, verify that “Delete this item from all other recipient’s mailboxes,” is checked to remove the appointment from all users’ calendars.
  • Click “OK.”

Now the appointment has been deleted and you can reschedule your appointment for the correct time.

---------------------------------------

If you are using GroupWise in Caching mode, you will need to create a new cache in order for your GroupWise appointments to appear at the correct time. To create a new cache:

  1. Find the folder that you are using to store cached messages.
    1. Log into GroupWise in Online mode.
    2. Select “Tools” -> “Options” from the menu.
    3. Double click on “Environment.”
    4. Click on the “File Location” tab.
    5. Make a note of “Caching mailbox directory” path.
    6. Close GroupWise.
  2. Make a backup of your cache folder
    1. Browse to the caching folder in Windows.
    2. Right click on the folder and choose “Rename.”
    3. Rename the folder as “GWcache_backup”.
  3. Create a new cache folder
    1. Log into GroupWise in Caching mode.
    2. When prompted to specify the Caching Mailbox location, click “OK” to use the default folder or browse to your desired caching folder and then click “OK.”
    3. Wait for GroupWise to complete the new cache. (This may take 2-3 hours to complete depending on the number of messages you have to be cached. You may continue to send and receive new messages while GroupWise is caching.)
    4. When prompted, close GroupWise
  4. Optional: Delete the backup cache folder.
    1. Browse to the “GWcache_backup” folder.
    2. Select the folder by clicking on it once.
    3. Press <DELETE> or drag the folder to the Recycle Bin.

If you use a Blackberry or other PDA device that synchronizes its calendar with your GroupWise account, you may notice a similar anomaly there.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

A variety of other electronic devices will be affected by the shift to Daylight Saving Time, for example:

* PDA’s Palm Pilots, iPAQ’s, etc
* Cellular phones and Smart phones, including Blackberry’s
* Laboratory equipment and data collection devices
* Cameras and recording devices
* iPods and MP3 players
* Your car’s computer

Check with the embedded help or the manufacturer’s web site to learn if you need to set the time zone for any of these devices to EST and how to do so.

WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO THINK ABOUT?

Though not directly related to the clock’s time change itself, the advent of Daylight Saving Time in the spring is a great reminder to change your fire alarm batteries.
