Access Your Network Drives from Home

NetStorage is a way for faculty, staff and students to securely access their network drives (P:\ , I:\ and U:\) from home, using their web browsers.

NetStorage provides Web-based access to your network drives.  By using a Web browser, you can access your files on your "P" drive and on your "I" drive anywhere in the world (as long as you have an active Internet connection and a Web browser).  Using NetStorage, you are able to not only access your files, but also to copy, move, rename, delete, read and write files between an off-campus computer and your network drives ("P:\, I:\, and U:\).

Requirements:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator
  • A connection to the Internet


Logging Onto NetStorage
  1. Go to http://netstorage.depauw.edu
  2. Login using your Novell username & password, you need to follow the pattern of .username.context.depauw (i.e., "johndoe_2011.student.depauw" or "janedoe.faculty.depauw")

Finding your Network Drives :
  • HOME@DS = Your P: Drive
  • DriveI@CLASSES = I: Drive
  • DriveU@DEPAUW = U: Drive (faculty and staff only)

Logging Off:

At the end of your NetStorage session, click the door icon near the top left of the screen to properly log out of NetStorage. Closing your Web browser or opening another browser window does not close your session at that computer and creates the potential for another user of the computer to access your account.




Managing Files and Folders

Once you have logged in, navigate through folders files by clicking them on them. You can use many of the same methods for expanding and contracting folders and opening files as on Windows or Macintosh. (Note: The file and folder list is non-alphabetical. There is no way to sort it)

To Download, Upload or Delete Files To Copy or Move Files

After choosing to copy or move a file, NetStorage gives you an option at the bottom of your browser to paste or cancel the copy or move.



NetStorage Tips and Tricks
Speed of File Transfers:
If you are using a dial-up connection, your upload and download speeds will vary. Using NetStorage with a dial-up connection will not be as fast as using it on-campus or with a high-speed connection.

General Info:
  • The file list is non alphabetical in NetStorage. There's no way to sort it.

  • NetStorage issues a cookie. If you don't accept the cookie it won't let you log in. But when you've been given a cookie, the next time you go to NetStorage without quitting the Web browser it lets you into your network drives without asking for a password.

    • You MUST logout AND quit the Web browser in order to get completely disconnected from NetStorage. This is true for both Macintosh and Windows.
    • If your computer crashes, the next time you go to NetStorage, it will let you right in without asking for a password. This is true for both Macintosh and Windows.

  • On a Macintosh not using OS X, you may need to increase the memory usage for Internet Explorer. First, try the Web browser without increasing the amount of memory it uses. If you find that you need to increase the amount of memory the Web browser uses, go to the Help System instructions for more information.

  • On a Macintosh, when downloading a file without an extension in its filename, the Web browser may not know what type of file you are downloading and not assign a file type to it. This will prevent you from double- clicking on the file to open it later. To solve this, open the application you want to use view the file first, then use the "Open..." command in the "File" menu to open the file. You can then use the "Save" or "Save As..." commands to save the file and give it the proper file type.

  • File names with spaces will appear in all the dialogs, except for the download dialog, with "%20" in place of the space. E.g., “my file has spaces.doc” will appear as “my%20file%20has%20spaces.doc”.
