Personally Owned Equipment

Software Support:  We are happy to help with connecting students' personally owned computers to the DePauw network and aiding in standard software support questions. Many times, we can identify problems and help the owners recify them, e.g. virus infections.   Due to the nature of modifying software on a system and impact of such work on personally used software, the best avenue of resolution for system problems may be to contact the manufacturer or seek out professional computer repair services.

Hardware Support: 

   Laptop Support Services (LSS) --

  • If you need assistance with hardware problems a Laptop Initiative (program) under warranty (Apple or Dell), there is no charge for service, and you are eligible for a loaner if your repair takes more than 4 hours.

  • If you have a Dell laptop that is not a Program machine, you can get your Dell warranty service here.

  • If you do not have a Program laptop, LSS can still perform your hardware repair if you wish. There is a one-time charge of $80.00 for diagnosis and labor required for your repair. We will let you know the additional cost of parts before they are ordered so you can approve it first. You must pay for your repair when you arrive to pick up your machine.

Aids in Troubleshooting

Several pieces of information can helpful in determining the extent and nature of the problem. Good ideas of what to know when placing a call for help:

  • The kind of equipment you are using, both hardware and software. For example, the make & model number of the offending equipment (computer, printer, scanner, etc.), and the version of Windows and any programs not functioning correctly.
  • What were you doing when the problem started? Have you installed any new components or made any system changes lately? How is it acting differently than usual? When did it last function correctly?
  • A couple of other very basic troubleshooting ideas to try before calling:
    • If it's a device problem, are the power lights on? Can you disconnect and reconnect the power and/or other connections (e.g. network)?
    • If it's a software problem, have you tried shutting down and restarting your system?
